Amazon QuickSight

Amazon QuickSight is well suited in any organization that is making business decisions based on performance data whether it be Marketing, Sales, Call Center, etc. It is a great tool especially for mature organizations that have a lot of data to work with. Amazon QuickSight may be not as well suited for newer organizations that are just beginning to drive data/performance metrics. The data available becomes more and more valuable to more that you have.

SAP Lumira

In today's world it’s all about getting information from raw data and in that area SAP BusinessObjects Lumira is performing significantly well. Probably this will bring the end of the traditional multi-page tabular report. If you can’t visualize your data, you can’t make decisions out of it

Pros

  • Amazon QuickSight is a really easy program to learn how to use.
  • Amazon QuickSight allows our team to customize the data using the various data sets, which makes the available reports incredibly powerful to our organization.
  • Our organization has the ability continually adjust our reports and build new reports as business needs change.
  • Even though our organization has different reports built for different departments, each department can still access and understand reports from across the company.

  • Eye catching easy to to use data visualizations.
  • Support to merge heterogeneous data sources and prepare it according to requirements.
  • Sharing the custom user stories in SAP BI/BO repository and give the end users flexibility to play around with it.
  • Almost no coding required, still fantastic outcomes.

Cons

  • One of the primary challenges I've had with Amazon QuickSight so far is that some of the reports I want to build use data from different data sets. Instead of being able to put all of the information I want to see into one report.
  • Some of our Amazon QuickSight reports only update every 24 hours. It would be great to see that data in real-time.
  • I would remove the various time zones from Amazon QuickSight and only use the time zone we are in.

  • Infographics can be made easier to use.
  • Mobile and handheld device orientations and rendering could be improved.
  • Time series sliders can be added which was there in dashboard designer.

Any visualization tool must provide greater and easy access to corporate varied data sources, ability to provide an easy data acquisition mechanisms both at design and run-time. Another feature is support of variety of devices, form factors and equally good performance to visualize the data. Aslo the ability to protect organization's sensitive data. I don't think Lumira is strong in any of the above mentioned areas.

Lumira is a desktop application runs in its own JVM. It installs its own java runtime libraries to avoid any core java version conflicts. The availability of the application is completely relies on individual machine hardware configuration. On a decent desktop, it performs well and always launches in either 32 or 64 bit environment based on the hosts system's OS

The performance is linear with amount of data that is being explored. We have done some benchmarks acquiring 10million data cells without having any performance problems. We need to make proper adjustments to jvm run time properties to start with higher heap size and other parameters that optimizes the run time performance

They have been very supportive to listen to our problems and resolve them quickly. Their customer engagement team works hand-in-hand and treat our success is their success. They are the liaison between us and their engineering teams to get access to and resolve the issues on a timely manner, otherwise our issues would have been lost

Most of the user guides are pretty comprehensive and very easy to understand. The product itself is designed to be self-serve tool, did not need much of the end-user training. Most of the training we had is to how to read the data, how to explore the data, how to acquire the data etc.

Installing the desktop software on end-user machines is always challenging. The machine specifications are the biggest factor when running Lumira and be able to handle large datasets during data exploration. This often demands beefy machines at least for power-users. Although Lumira software licensing is not a big problem but managing partner's extensions and keeping track of their individual licenses may be an issue. If there is a way to bundle the more popular extensions such as vSQL or vOLAP should be bundled in core product and offer them as part of Lumira license instead of a separate license which causer operational burden.

Alternatives Considered

All of the other reporting platforms my organization has used previously were within our CRM and not a standalone program. In that we were very limited in being able to slice and dice the data the way that we wanted to

Lumira is the last of my visualization tool selections, this is in comparison to Tableau, Qlik, etc

There are many members across my organization that use the QuickSight reports throughout each business day. There are various reports built for various departments as well as reports that cross over to all departments. There have not been any issues across the various departments with viewing the reports and using unique filters to look at the reports differently. Our IT department is the only department within the organization that has the necessary permissions to create new reports and/or make changes to existing reports

Data Integration

All of the data that feeds into Amazon QuickSight comes from our CRM, Clarity. We do not have data coming in from any other sources. Some of the data that comes in is in real-time and some of the data only updates every 24 hours. Overall, the API feed of data seems to be very seamless and there have not been any hiccups in the feed.

Enterprise wide implementation is a challenge with data security and trustedness. No easy installation can be done across the enterprise. no upgrade paths also available from SAP. They have so much of experience with desktop implementation, there it could be a controlled environment with a capital budget. These may be resolved in the upcoming releases

  • For my client, the cost of Tableau made Lumira attractive but unfortunately, due to limitations on Lumira... the client is thinking the Tableau investment may have been better for achieving business objectives.
  • Data size limitiations.
