Apache
Apache Lucene is a perfect text search implementation where the heap space usage needs to be kept to its minimal. It also enables search based on various search fields and most importantly the search and index process can happen simultaneously. The only scenario where it might be less appropriate would be when the index size grows too big. We have witnessed few scalable issues where the search would take a while when the index size is too large.

Yext
Yext is great for bigger clients. If your client has a franchise of any kind, or even multiple locations, that's an ideal use case. For smaller clients, with one location that doesn't change a lot, Yext isn't as viable, and the effort to update maybe ten or fifteen listings would be worth it.

Pros
Apache
  • We found Apache Lucene to be extremely performant in querying large amounts of data and retrieving the correct files based on the metadata provided.
  • The online community offers great support for the product. Even though it is an open source tool, it is not difficult to find help online for it.
  • When we were creating a proof of concept application, we found that the software worked just as well, while being run locally on a resource-limited PC.

Yext
  • Yext is very, very user-friendly and easy to use.
  • Yext provides information within the portal on how you can enhance your listings as well as how you can fix any issues with your listings that may exist.
  • Yext's dedicated account managers can help you with any issues that may arise. For example our location pin on Apple Maps was wrong on one of our clinic listings and our Yext account manager reached out directly to Apple support and fixed the issue.

Cons
Apache
  • User interface for setup and maintenance would be helpful.
  • Easier cloud/cluster setup.
  • Better, centralized documentation.

Yext
  • Cost. This platform offers a lot of powerful features, but it has an expensive barrier to entry.
  • Annual contracts limit flexibility for smaller companies
  • The biggest drawback is that you need to keep your subscription active or listings/citation data will revert back to what it was pre-Yext implementation

Alternatives Considered
Apache
The search and index performance of [Apache] Lucene is excellent and the quality of results is good, if not better. For implementing it with small scale applications it is a no brainer, Lucene is the best and most cost effective solution. Learning curve is not too steep either.

Yext
We use Yext and all the other products mentioned here. Yext overlaps a bit with BrightLocal, but BrightLocal acknowledges Yext and thus makes it easy to avoid duplicated work. Each service provides a unique service that we use with our clients. We have been with Yext since its early days and at that time, they were a direct tool to manage a client's online footprint. Yext continues to upgrade its services providing new ways to help clients.
