Apache Lucene

Apache Lucene is a perfect text search implementation where the heap space usage needs to be kept to its minimal. It also enables search based on various search fields and most importantly the search and index process can happen simultaneously. The only scenario where it might be less appropriate would be when the index size grows too big. We have witnessed few scalable issues where the search would take a while when the index size is too large.

Yext Search Experience Cloud

Yext is very well suited for a larger, multi-location business. As your organization grows it becomes more and more challenging to manually manage your online listings across the web. With Yext you simply add your location information and the sites they work with are automatically updated. For smaller businesses with only a few locations, it would be much more cost-effective to create and manage these listings yourself instead of paying a monthly fee.

Pros

Apache Lucene

  • We found Apache Lucene to be extremely performant in querying large amounts of data and retrieving the correct files based on the metadata provided.
  • The online community offers great support for the product. Even though it is an open source tool, it is not difficult to find help online for it.
  • When we were creating a proof of concept application, we found that the software worked just as well, while being run locally on a resource-limited PC.

Yext Search Experience Cloud

  • Making sure our location data is correctly being understood by Google.
  • Taking into account best design principles for our pages layout.
  • Staying on top of Google best practices so we don't have to.
  • Building a very robust place for us to store all our location information.
  • Solid integrations with some of our other key partners, for example Olo, Punchh.
  • Being a very good partner for us, our Client Success Manager is exceptional.

Cons

Apache Lucene

  • User interface for setup and maintenance would be helpful.
  • Easier cloud/cluster setup.
  • Better, centralized documentation.

Yext Search Experience Cloud

  • Cost. This platform offers a lot of powerful features, but it has an expensive barrier to entry.
  • Annual contracts limit flexibility for smaller companies
  • The biggest drawback is that you need to keep your subscription active or listings/citation data will revert back to what it was pre-Yext implementation

Yext Search Experience Cloud 7.4
Based on 16 answers
We are a larger company with 26 locations, so we may receive additional attention. But they are always quick to answer our calls or emails. I rarely need support as the software delivers as promised. I will say their staff thus far has been very knowledgable about Yext and some lesser-known features. For us, they really understand our needs and why I'd be asking for certain solutions.

Alternatives Considered

Apache Lucene

The search and index performance of [Apache] Lucene is excellent and the quality of results is good, if not better. For implementing it with small scale applications it is a no brainer, Lucene is the best and most cost effective solution. Learning curve is not too steep either.

Yext Search Experience Cloud

We didn't know about BirdEye until after working with Yext. Definitely excited to work with them and see how their solution stacks up. It seems to be Yext but much more robust and hopefully actually functional. The bedside manner at Yext was the most unprofessional I have ever seen in my entire career.

Return on Investment

Apache Lucene

  • Being an open source project we did not have to pay any licensing fees for using Apache Lucene. It has greatly improved our search functionality in our web apps.

Yext Search Experience Cloud

  • Yext has absolutely strengthened our SEO performance and has driven leads that perform extremely well.
  • Yext has improved our consultation show rate because all of the clinic information for each of our locations is accurate no matter which website our clients are using to search for the clinic info.
  • Yext has allowed our organization to ensure the correct phone numbers are listed across the web, which increased the number of inbound leads that come into our Call Center.
