Appcues

Appcues works well for building in-app walkthroughs, modal windows to pop up information to users, and collect feedback from users. It's very easy to use, but it can be cumbersome at times and you do run into roadblocks that force you to create workarounds. For more purposes Appcues works great.

UserTesting

UserTesting is well suited for any scenarios to which an average consumer can relate and behave as they normally do. For retail/e-commerce, it's particularly helpful when trying to get an understanding of how users browse products, find what they're looking for, evaluate product options, etc. It is less useful for scenarios where the user is asked to simulate a specific experience and not fully invested in the task - for example, anything that simulates an actual purchase, as users aren't spending real money and behaving the way a qualified customer might.

Pros

Appcues

  • Appcues makes the setup process extremely simple. Rather than having to build all of the cues and flows into our app, we simply installed the Appcues code which essentially lays over top our app and allows us to build any new flows we'd like and push them live without having to consult our engineers.
  • Appcues provides a variety of cue options to display to users. There are tooltips, slide outs and full modals. This allows us to target users on different pages without being too invasive.
  • Their targeting and reporting is also superb. We're able to show flows to certain users based on URL paths and other actions they've taken within our app. We can also see some great reports of users who have completed our flows and metrics on where they stopped if they did not complete a flow.

UserTesting

  • Simple product. Although less features than some key competitors, [UserTesting] centers on its core features and does it well.
  • Relationship management is great. One feels supported. Prior signing with [UserTesting], sales team truly tried to understand our need and showcase their product based on that. Once we were users, tremendous effort were displayed to onboard us and offer support
  • Whether it's using [UserTesting's] panel or our own, there's a lot of flexibility there to find the right audience for our test.

  • There are certain limitations of where tooltips can be placed, depending on the application is built.
  • The way 'appcues' are organized in the management console can be a little more user-friendly.

UserTesting

  • I wish the interface was not implemented as "pages" where you have to save your work or risk losing it if your connection drops. I would prefer to have my work autosave or use an application I download to my computer.
  • It can sometimes be hard to tell where people are tapping when watching the recording of people using their phone
  • Video clips are very easy to make, but there's no way to rename clips after you save them

UserTesting has drastically changed the way we research. We are now conducting research at a scale and pace that would be impossible to replicate using our traditional recruitment methods. Additionally, the ease of sharing information and findings out of UserTesting has made our research more dynamic and engaging to stakeholders. We can't imagine a situation in which we step backwards now that we have demonstrated the expansion capability UserTesting provides to an in-house UX research practice.

The organization of tests have been terrible. I don't know why there aren't nested folders as a way to organize all the tests. Some of the restrictions on creating the right audience is really frustrating too. For example, if I want any users between age 18-65 and also have a wide range of devices, you're not always guaranteed a good range of ages. You might get only 30-year-olds in your test.

Support is great. They're very responsive. Although sometimes you can have some issues that you'll be waiting on a response for a while. However, it never feels like you're talking to robots, every time you go through support it feels like you're talking to a real human and someone who actually cares about your issues.

From a technical perspective, the implementation was extremely smooth. Most of the change management / implementation hurdles were clearing use of the tool through our various security, legal, and information privacy teams. Once these concerns were addressed (UserTesting.com was very helpful in providing all the needed documentation), the implementation process was very simple and we were able to get going right away.

One of the things we really loved about Appcues that ultimately led us to go with them is that it has a two-way integration with Heap Analytics. We are big fans of Heap, so being able to create user segments in Heap and push them over to Appcues to show modals to was a huge plus to us. We also found Appcues to be easier than many of the other products out there, which meant less time training new employees how to use it.

UserTesting

I have no used any other product similar to UserTesting. I am aware of User Interviews but do not think it has the audience/user reach like user testing does. I have used a variety of survey programs like SurveyMonkey and Typeform and have used them in conjunction with UserTesting to review a user's thoughts while they're taking a survey.

  • We receive less support tickets from new users because our Appcues flows guide them through completing basic tasks in their account.
  • Customers in our trial accounts and free accounts rarely reach out to our team with setup needs.
  • Customers using our Appcues flows love the experience, which is crucial during the onboarding process -- especially since our user-base can be less technically savvy.

  • Faster feedback and allowing more iterations than we might normally have
  • Allows us to make informed decisions based on user research, which hopefully will be a cost savings since we get it right the first time, but it is difficult to assign a KPI or ROI
  • Allows us to run more studies than we could without it, especially the recruiting and unmoderated studies and mobile studies.
