AppDynamics

We execute various types of performance testing such as load testing, stress testing, endurance testing, and spike testing on the daily basis in various environments. It was tough to detect and monitor the performance issues for each type of performance testing, but using AppDynamics, it is possible to create a trend in bottleneck detection. When the performance testing projects integrated with CI/CD pipeline, then the AppDynamics plugin helps a lot. for example, if there is a performance degradation, it allows the job to be failed.

NetSuite

NetSuite is fantastic for accounting purposes. Our accountants are able to map new accounts in NetSuite and have that information pull in automatically. They can also drill into any numbers that don't make sense and understand what bills or accruals drove those numbers and have the ability to pull up the PDF of the bill/invoice in question to identify if it was booked to the correct GL account. All of this can be done in just a few clicks and makes the accountant's job significantly easier. However, it is not best suited for forecasting and modeling. If you are trying to forecast next month or rest of year's numbers, NetSuite is not the ideal tool.

Pros

  • What sold me was the agent-less monitoring of the databases so we could actually see in real time what days/times we needed to apply additional CPU resources.
  • Provides complete visibility on the application's performance (Application Monitoring), database performance, and infrastructure performance ranging from 1 day - 1 year.
  • The level of insights it provided helped us address the production issues quickly and we started using it for all new development and deployment. It helped us move from being reactive to proactive in identifying and managing issues/ bottlenecks

  • NetSuite provides a lot of control. Users can be granted more than one role, with each role clearly defining the permissions to view/create/edit records, transactions, reports, etc. The combinations are seemingly endless.
  • NetSuite is easily customizable. You can add fields and record types to your customers/employees/vendors. This makes it very easy to be able to track data that is specific to your company. Reporting is also supremely customizable which makes getting the answers from your data very easy.
  • NetSuite has a comprehensive network of partners. Whatever you need to customize or automate, it can be done and there are plenty of partners to help.
  • NetSuite is very feature rich. We have been live for almost 1.5 years and we are still learning new things and implementing new features.

Cons

  • The initial set up for some parts of the features could be better documented.

  • Netsuite needs improved bank feeds. We do a lot of data entry for individual bank and credit card transactions at month end. They could learn from Xero in this area.

I would have given them a 3/10 two years ago. We now finally have had the same account manager for 1.5 years. Previously, they churned account managers a lot. It is definitely easier to escalate support if you have account manager you can turn to. To get it done a lot, you have to escalate to your account manager. We do put in support cases via ticket, but account managers provide an escalation point. They are generally not technical, but some are. They are reactive - don't do proactive outreach to check in on us

We initially tried to have NetSuite implement but we did not have a lot of success. They didn’t want to put in all of our historical sales order data, and at the time, we had a lot of 3-5 yr contracts that would have been on a spreadsheet.

We hired a contractor called Jim Gamble to come in house and help with the implementation . Jim now works at BridgePoint Consulting. I would recommend him. He had an accounting background and understand systems. The NetSuite consultants didn’t understand our revenue model and how it worked. Jim did.

With the initial NetSuite team, we not satisfied at all. With Jim, we were very satisfied. One of the downfalls with NetSuite is that they had in their mind how it needs to be implemented, but didn’t take into account our considerations. At the time, their customers were much younger than us and didn’t have historical data. They also worked with companies that did one year contracts. They had no do desire to listen to our facts. With 800-900 customers with multi-year contracts, we would have been maintaining spreadsheets for numerous years. They weren’t willing at all to work with our specific situation. I understand they have best practices, but sometimes those best practices don’t fit the client. They didn’t have any out of the box thinking – very prescribed implementation

Alternatives Considered

AppDynamics automatically discovers and monitors every dependency and business transaction out of the box (no manual instrumentation required). AppDynamics proprietary Dynamic Baselining takes the seasonality of your application into account and proactively alerts you on every slow transaction (not just the slowest) and does not require the disabling of monitoring functionality as a compromise to limit overhead. AppDynamics allows you to isolate and resolve issues all from one tightly integrated platform rather than stitched together products.

We have been able to scale our business 25X without any major overhaul with Netsuite. Its dashboard setup makes onboarding new employees very easy and allows data to be shared across multiple offices. Its cloud setup does not put any pressure on IT to scale servers or other infrastructure. We have been able to become much more efficient in all aspects of the business.

Return on Investment

  • AppDynamics is helping many applications by identifying the performance issues and bottlenecks so that they can be fixed to improve application performance, reduce resource utilization, and memory leaks.T his in-turn provides a cost benefit to the organizations and customer satisfaction.
  • We can analyze large amounts of data quickly and it helps us spot upcoming issues before they have happened. This means we can be safe in the knowledge that our network is going to run without any problems which is extremely important to a business.
  • Monitoring app usage and error reporting. AppDynamics can also help you drastically cut down the time spent looking for the source of an issue, it can then help towards preventing a repeat of the same problem.
No photo available
  • For us, NetSuite being in the cloud has solved a whole list of issues we had by running the previous ERP on premise, like infrastructure, OS licenses, IT maintenance etc. All these costs were on top of the ERP software license.
  • Along with NetSuite adoption, we have simplified and optimized some of the business processes and procedures we were using, on finance and manufacturing side. One reason was because NetSuite is not supporting some of the aspects of these processes.
  • The implementation time was 40% longer than initially planned due to some NetSuite limitations/misunderstandings on finance side, which was causing delays of 3-4 months in paying the vendor bills.
