Arena

Arena is well-suited to companies where multiple people or departments need to review and approve BOM changes. It manages the process well and allows for notifications, required approvals, etc. Arena also makes it easy to share that data with others outside the company, for example contract manufacturers. They can be given access exclusively to those products they are building, and to information they need about those products.

It is well suited in an engineering environment when reviewing CAD data. It is less appropriate to use Vis Mockup when truly accurate measures are needed.

Pros

  • Tracking Changes is extremely easy and looking back at past changes and which items were affected is great.
  • The overall basic UX of Arena is simple enough to grasp and a lot of the different views are conveniently within grasp.
  • Storing all different kinds of file types is useful. From Software data, to powerpoints, to pdfs. Arena handles it all very well and being able to grab the data with one search is extremely effective.

Cons

  • Limiting users from viewing only Approved Suppliers is not an option unless you implement Access Policies. Since Access Policies is additive in nature we have to think backwards when implementing. This occurs with several other views that we want to block so to get around this we created a rule but then we don't enable it in order for us to block that view from being seen.
  • Training Plans can be viewed by everyone even if they are not assigned to that training plan. This can be an issue because employees can view WIs that they are not assigned to. There should be a feature that we can use to limit users to only viewing training plans that they are assigned to.
  • We have about 40 users who are listed as partners in our database. In some cases, we want to switch partners over to full users but there is not an efficient process to switch partners over to full users without contacting Arena Support. The support team has been swift in their responses but it would be easier if we can do this on our own.

Because of our current customer needs, we will most likely maintain use of Siemens PLM products for some time. Aside from the initial software cost, we pay for yearly maintenance. Maintaining our yearly maintenance licensing with Siemens, we receive access to all of the latest software releases, as well as premier technical support

Alternatives Considered

The arena user interface is much better, although I think Windchill may be a little better at change management or at least visualizing it. Also, Windchill can create PDFs of our mechanical drawings on their release so it is critical for our ME team.

It's a very robust and mature tool. The only thing that would make it better is the have a version embrace the cloud, which I'm sure is underway, but it's complicated, so it will take more time. But when it's done, look out. It will be near-perfect!

  • Increased Engineering lead times for design work
