For our purposes, it is well suited. The learning curve for new users to develop a basic level of competence is relatively easy to accomplish. While the vendor has introduced many nice features since we started using the product (BIM and Forecast to name two that I would like to see our users take more advantage of), the basic product has remained readily accessible for users.

Boomi

Dell Boomi is well suited for integrating between ERP systems, especially Netsuite, SAP, Salesforce. Built in access to platform API, Auth to API, access to data or triggers/actions, etc. speeds delivery. There are many connectors available making this process faster. It is best suited to an organization that needs to rapidly roll out new integrations or changes on a regular basis. It's less well suited when larges amounts of data need to be processed very quickly in a parallel method. It's possible to handle things in parallel, but because of the workflow connectors and design process you are much more likely to build something that is handling one record at a time sequentially instead of building a process that is processing hundreds of records simultaneously for real time processing. It's also less well suited where complex code is the common path for integration as it does not connect to source control and common software development processes for managing code/test/deploy. (Those things can be used, but it requires additional effort to manage.)

Pros

Control-M

  • Control-M Advanced File Transfer is a very useful add-on, allowing for a wide variety of file transfers to be configured "out of the box" and then used as part of the standard batch flow. This module is not included in the base price but is available at a relatively small additional cost.
  • Using Control-M's GUI (the Enterprise Manager) allows for efficient management of the enterprise and can tie up a lot of "loose ends". Often the first point of tracking problems is to check with the Control-M guys!
  • BMC is definitely moving the product forward, the new module "Application Integrator" is very helpful in building and deploying your own bespoke Control-M jobs and allows for closer and more secure integration.
  • Although Control-M does open up the enterprise in an operational sense, the security settings (should you choose to implement them) are robust.

  • Pre-built connectors to almost anything which greatly reduce time to release of your integration needs.
  • Easy to use development platform with drag&drop features. Non-technical people could build simple integration processes in no time.
  • Great user community where you can get quick help if needed. Boomi people hang around there a lot.

  • Single Major Action per job: this statement needs to be clarified. There are ways to do more than one action per job, and there are pre and post job commands available in most templates. Also some templates like FTP can have many instructions built in, like deleting source files after transfer (these are part of the positives). But basically you can only do one major action, like call one web service, or call one stored procedure per job. I believe this limitation is due to their licensing model, to ensure you will run as many jobs as possible.
  • The only other negative is a necessary corollary of a having a powerful product. The learning curve is not simple due to the power of the product. I would recommend dedicate training for the primary operators and users of the product.

  • The dashboards are limited
  • Running Low latency improves performance but makes resolving issues very difficult
  • Unable to sign up for alerts for one process only. Alerts go out at an account level. If you want to get notifications for a process you need to build it into your application.
  • The folder structure of components can get messy if not well governed.
  • Easy to create duplicate components and not realizing that someone else in your company already created one.
  • Scripting could be improved. You don't know if you have errors in your code until you run the process.

There is always a situation that someone can think of where I have to say, "No we can't do that", however I'm confident that we've been able to meet and most of the time exceed our end user expectations with what the product can offer them.

There are many supported features and have yet to run into something that we cannot do. Its user interface is very intuitive which would allow users to begin developing fairly easily. Control-M's overall usability is very good because it is simple to use. Control-M SelfService is an easy tool to give to some of the users who want to use a web interface. The training curve for most users is very short and most of the functions are very simple to figure out.

The atom sphere takes a time to load, when I open a process or when I open a log. One more slow processing is when I import objects from NetSuite.
About the performance of processing, it looks like Boomi takes a time to initialize some things such as connectors before starting the process. This is also performance we have.

Although the product is very stable there have been a few incidents when I needed support. I have worked with technicians from all around the globe because of the rolling support. This gives me the quickest support when I need it most in those early hours of the morning. The technicians I have worked with have been very knowledgeable and if necessary got help when needed.

We have found them very responsive and helpful both during the initial sales and setup process as well as on an ongoing basis through our experience once we were customers.

I have been using this product for so long and it works so well we have not had the need to evaluate other job schedulers. I have occasionally looked to see what was out there but I have seen anything so far that would require me to go so far as to evaluate the products.

Our team has used Actian DataConnect since the Mid 1990's. It was formerly known as Data Junction and then Pervasive Data Integrator. We looked at Boomi as an additional tool to aid in our Integrations. We did compare it to Informatica and thought it was a better fit for our customers.

We have been using Boomi and doing great. I like the way we can break down data into small units of work. It simplifies how to handle multi-conditional pathing and the unit of work level.

Currently, I am working at SFCG, using various tools to build integrations into Oracle CX products. When we started kicking the tires on Boomi and in the training and development since that time, I've tried a series of processes out that have given me trouble in other tools. Below is a brief recap of my experience and growing admiration for the way in which this tool has made my job easier.

My first goal with using Boomi was to connect to an instance of CRM On-Demand (a task that can on other platforms be a time-consuming endeavor). What I found was a useful wizard, pictured below, with a series of pop-up steps to follow.
In other tools, I have spent more time in trying to define the schemas, than actually completing the maps that use them. Boomi reduced that time from my process. This is one small example of many demonstrating how my teammates and I feel as if we were working in black and white and are now working in color with Boomi AtomSphere. Tasks I've taken for granted are complex, time-consuming and meticulous are simplified, streamlined and transformed with powerful features like Boomi Suggest - a handy feature that leverages the collective intelligence of the Boomi community to suggest which fields should be mapped in a Data Map.

You don't need to take my word for it, another member of our team, Li Mo started building out an integration to Oracle Sales Cloud, using the SOAP API Connector. He was able to do a complete integration to insert a record into the Account entity, and it took about an hour and a half.

Note: it had been about 1 month since we both actually took the training courses. I believe we choose an additional tool that plays to the inner strengths of working in the cloud, and I can not wait until I start full blown to continue development on new integration projects using Dell Boomi AtomSphere.

Recommendations to other buyers: Try it to see if it fits your needs.

  • Troubleshooting has improved with multiple groups as they are easily able to determine if data loss/job failure is the reason for a data issue.
  • Conversion took significantly longer than was originally estimated by BMC so we had to run two platforms for almost 9 months. This definitely slowed down efficiency as many users did not know which tool to utilize for data load trouble shooting for close to a year.
  • Being able to communicate with users across the globe in a universal language and time reference has vastly decreased data issues and greatly improved proficiency in getting new jobs implemented quickly and without problems.

  • It has allowed us to scale significantly without having to add headcount, specifically those geared towards data entry. We went from a $10m ARR business to $200m ARR business with the same amount of Order Processors and 12x amount of transactions by leveraging Boomi to perform a lot of the work, and then having the Order Processing team to simply review that the transaction was processed successfully.
