CyberArk Privileged Account Security

The system is great for enterprise or larger IT departments or teams where temporary or full access may be given using privileged IDs. Requirements for needing local admin access is also eliminated which can help with specific Windows workstation related tasks. It can be very useful when working with remote teams or contractors who may need temporary access to a system when required.

Thycotic Secret Server

Secret Server is really a great solution for any business that needs more than one person to have access to passwords for various devices, systems, and websites. Even an organization with only one person who would need access, if that person was no longer around, a simple change in Active Directory could assign those permissions to their successor. Candidly, the only scenario I can think of where a business might not want Secret Server would be a sole-proprietorship that was unconcerned with succession or security in general. The free version has no cost beyond using a server, and it's pretty low overhead.

Pros

CyberArk Privileged Account Security

  • Automatically discover new servers on the network and take control of the local admin password by vaulting it and ensuring nobody knows the password. A different password on every server.
  • Automatically roll the password in a configurable manner - after each use, after a certain period of time, etc.
  • Track and govern sensitive account usage by ensuring only properly authorized users can access the vault and obtain the credentials and then monitor usage.

Cons

CyberArk Privileged Account Security

  • GUI - right now everything is on one page/dashboard. Some level of folder/Safe type view would be great
  • More options when storing passwords - especially for network based passwords
  • Better integrations with vendors like Cisco so that admins dont need to really get the password from the vault (think Last Pass type add on)

Thycotic Secret Server

  • The sharing functionality NEEDS improvement. We share most passwords at a group level, but then it becomes impossible to share them with a dynamic group and one or two one-off people as well. This is a major shortcoming.
  • I don't love the interface. I feel like there is an attempt at a dashboard, but it is really not effective.
  • I've heard, but never seen, that the software can actually change passwords in the target systems. If this is part of its deliverable, I do not know how to use it, and I don't know how you would do that. Seems like a great feature for password management.

Customer support and technical support have always been great when we require assistance. Especially when we come across issues that we're not familiar with.

I actually haven't had to work with support. I have spoken to a colleague of mine who has worked with support and has been pleased.

Alternatives Considered

CyberArk Privileged Account Security

It is known as one of the safest products in the market. It has good support and is also available as on-premise. You can run it virtually on VMWare (and probably on other hypervisors as well). You can have a second instance on bare metal and that makes it a very safe system.

KeePass is fine for individual use, but it does not meet the same objectives. There are a lot of products like KeePass that are just not as portable or robust, and do not have the kind of granularity Secret Server has. Being able to assign password permissions based on user roles is huge, especially from a security standpoint.

Thycotic Secret Server

  • Privileged Password Safe. Great for keeping those super important passwords all in one place.
  • The solution has amazing logging reports. As an admin you can see what actions users take, whether they view a secret or display the password.
