FreeNAS

If the user has system administrative experience and is willing to spend time learning FreeNAS, then FreeNAS is well worth it. If the user does not have much experience or does not have the time to learn FreeNAS, then using a COTs product that is more intuitive and easy to use might be beneficial.
FreeNAS is very powerful and can do basically anything you want it to do. The user just needs to spend the time to learn it as it may not be clearly intuitive how to implement the features that are needed for the user's organization.

Veeam Backup & Replication

We have found that Veeam is very well suited for providing backup and redundancy for cloud based file sharing systems. We use SharePoint sites accessed through teams and groups, and Veeam gives my CEO piece of mind that our critical data is protected multiple different ways. Being able to spread backups across geography and systems has been a real breath of fresh air, given the current state of play regarding cybersecurity.

Pros

FreeNAS

  • The FreeNAS web interface is modern looking. It makes tasks like provisioning drives into raid volumes easy.
  • The ZFS raid option allows you to add in an SSD as a cache drive to increase performance.

Veeam Backup & Replication

  • Easy to use front end to manage Backup jobs efficiently and review problems during job execution
  • Restore capabilities of physical servers to VMs or other physical machines with ease (including bootable media)
  • Snapshot support and restoring them with just a couple of mouse clicks

Cons

FreeNAS

  • The NAS User Interface could be made more user-friendly and easier to configure, but in the most recent version improvements have been made.
  • It could be easier to back up the encryption key and configuration so they can be easily restored.
  • We have seen isolated issues when streaming large files (8GB+) across the network, specifically video files. Uploading and Downloading is fine, when but streaming live sometimes we see an issue.

Veeam Backup & Replication

  • I would like to have some more monitoring on backup jobs, e.g. unusual growth of changed data due to ransomware. I know it's available in Veeam ONE but it would like to have it in Veeam Backup & Replication.
  • Startup time of the management console could be a bit faster.

I really have no complaints about Veeam Backup & Replication. Their service has been excellent and the cost is minimal in comparison to other services I checked out. Implementation wasn't simple and the Veeam Support team was there to help each step of the way.

We've been using Veeam Backup & Replication for several years in our
organization, and we perform backups in all of our environments every
night. It’s one of the simplest yet effective and reliable solutions in
the market for the backup segment. You can check out the free Veeam
agent, so you can get an idea of the full product.

The Veeam Backup & Replication solution is up and running every time you need it as it was planned. In more than 3 years that we have been using the product every night, it might have failed or presented an error once or twice, so the availability percentage is almost at 100%.

To identify a bottleneck in the data path, Veeam Backup & Replication
detects the component with the maximum workload, the component
that works for the most time of the job. For example, you use a
low-speed storage device as the backup repository. Even if VM data is
retrieved from the SAN storage on the source side and transported over a
high-speed link, VM data flow will still be impaired at the backup
repository.

Support response can be slow and sometimes tedious if you have a non-generic issue in your environment. Due to my experience with Veeam, I often discover the solutions before support does, but on the rare occasion where I need a higher tier of support, their experience and skill set are excellent. If you truly find something odd in your environment, Veeam Support, Development and their teams of engineers will figure it out and provide custom hot-fixes when necessary.

(I assume this question should say "Veeam" and not "Crownpeak Universal Consent Platform")Planning is key. Planning your backup schedule, size, data restore points, replication if you're doing that, &c. Testing is also important; make sure you back something up and then do a test restore. Set up alerts so you know if things aren't working (or even if they are, always good to know that too).

Alternatives Considered

FreeNAS

If you are ready to build it yourself, FreeNAS is the best. I tried so many alternatives, including paid versions, and nothing compares to the power of FreeNAS. If you need an enterprise-grade NAS, you would go with an HPE or Dell because of the support, not the features. If you want a middle-range - QNap, Sinology, Netgear - they have an awesome product with powerful features, but you need to buy the hardware and software from them, with fewer options, and very basic support.

Veeam Backup & Replication

We used Zerto and CA Arcserve to address these needs without migrating to Veeam Backup & Replication. Zerto is a very successful instant backup and we are still using it now. It does what Veeam application cannot do in instant replication. CA Arcserve, on the other hand, is clearly lagging behind the Veeam Backup & Replication product and does not meet today's requirements.

Scalability can be addressed in many ways, but there is a consequence:
Higher performance and smaller backup windows may put too much stress on
production storage, and therefore, on its performance and Availability
to production workloads. To reduce stress on production storage, version
9.5 introduces a new way of reading VM disks that is optimized for
enterprise storage.

Return on Investment

FreeNAS

  • Backing up FreeNAS is not simple, as it does not have a built-in option to backup.
Chris Thibeau | TrustRadius Reviewer

Veeam Backup & Replication

  • We are able to backup some machines that we could not backup with our previous solution
  • We are able to do an hourly backup now
  • We will be able to implement immutable backups
  • We will be able to replicate to the cloud
