HPE ProLiant DL

When we need new physical server hardware we go with [HPE ProLiant DL]. They are cost effective and they last. we have it as the back bone of our clustered Hyper-V environment and the hardware runs without issue. We also use it as the backbone of our stand alone servers as well. We have a [HPE ProLiant DL] backup server and the RAID solution on board allows us to easily add and expand our raid volume to meet our data storage needs with ease.

IBM Power System LC922

The campus benefits from the distributed workload capability. Much of our data is structured by varied class/department needs, so we kept to a standard setup of these systems. This was mainly in our ETL systems where we focused our use of Power compute. The servers themselves worked great and we had no difficulty. They handled large datasets with ease and we have been satisifed.

Pros

HPE ProLiant DL

  • Highly reliable. We've never had one go down unexpectedly in 11 years.
  • High performance. Current 380 G10s are configured with 1.5TB of RAM, always the shortest commodity in virtual environments.
  • Great manageability: iLO boards allow us to run headless without the Advanced license even.

Cons

HPE ProLiant DL

  • iLO Advanced - I feel like this is just a money grab. Give me the remote features, at least the remote console, with the purchase. I'd be OK with paying for the advanced license for more centralized functionality, but straight remote sessions? That should just be there.
  • Software entitlements and online interaction are a little wanting. This isn't the hardware per se, but enterprise products are often heavily tied to online services and tools and that could be a lot better.

  • Wasn't cheap
  • Administration has a big learning curve and can be difficult
  • Scalability can be hard

Usability

HPE ProLiant DL

HPE ProLiant DL 9.2
Based on 11 answers
HPE ProLiant DL has a very intuitive interface for users, where not much training is required if it is their first time using it. I am able to quickly login and perform whatever tasks are needed on the server as the interface has a friendly design. It has a lot of detail as well, but the major functions are pronounced and this is very helpful in my everyday job.

The technical support of HP is great. Whenever we have any issue whether it is a hardware fault or some bug in the software or even just a misconfiguration the technical support team of HP is always there to assist us. In case of a hardware failure, they quickly locate and replace the faulty component with minimal to no impact on our business.

Alternatives Considered

HPE ProLiant DL

HPE ProLiant DLs are nice servers. They provide good performance, have scalability potential, are very reliable, and fit our expectations. Service support is high quality. In most cases, I prefer to buy HPE servers again and keep them as long as possible because they provide best of the best in uptime and usability.

IBM Power System LC922

We are an IBM shop. We trust IBM and have had good outcomes with almost all of their previous products in this solution area. It was much easier to have management sign-on with a company that provides solutions that are common amongst other competing companies which they might someday work for as well.

Return on Investment

HPE ProLiant DL

  • Allowed us to move forward with running web-based applications and to scale them as needed.
  • The lack of future driver support has made it difficult to consider upgrades, we may need to go with more expensive hardware in the future to be able to maintain upgrades.
  • While we have not realized all the business growth benefits we expected from this investment, we have had much more flexibility and options when we need to change our environment to meet the business needs.

IBM Power System LC922

  • Good return on usage due to it's handling of increased data loads
  • Dependence upon Power tied us too directly to IBM which was not something we wanted to do as a learning institution focused more on other products and systems like Google/Google Cloud.
  • If you are using compute or not you are paying for it so the price can be high.
