It's well suited to organizations that intend to dedicate the staff to maintaining it as recommended in best practices material. It's much too large and complicated if it's only to be used as an address book and in those cases, a much simpler CRM might work better.

Meltwater Media Intelligence Platform

Meltwater works if you need an easy way to find contact info for people of influence. That's where they excel. I would not get it if you are only working with the same individuals from the same places. Growing your network is where this tool really comes to benefit a PR professional.

Meltwater Media Intelligence Platform

  • Keyword Search - We are able to find who has recently written about a topic. This allows us to target those who have been recently interested in what we are writing about in our release. It is also a way for us to expand our contact list to reach people who may be writing outside of their normal beat/genre.
  • Search Function - We take advantage of several saved searches that track media mentions. This uses boolean logic to get us the exact results we are looking for. The search function is also great for searching for mentions of our competitors, narrowing our search to a specific product we may have done a campaign on or a more broad topic outside of our company alone.
  • Reporting - Meltwater allows us to set up our own customized reports that are emailed to us on a regular basis that we request.
  • Dashboard - Each user is able to set up a dashboard (homepage) for the platform with the reporting functions that are specific to what we are interested in or need to be aware of. This is a great day-to-day update of our media mentions.

  • While the platform has seemingly unlimited options, it takes a while to learn. Our product support representative has been really helpful in web tutorials, and the Knowledge Base documents explain some things in detail, but it may be helpful for Meltwater to publish videos of them navigating the site.
  • Meltwater finds obscure placements, but it misses many on prominent web sites. In the last month, it's missed stories on Forbes, New York Times, Huffington Post and Bloomberg.
  • Meltwater can improve its updating of media contacts. I think they do this annually, but I average six or seven dead email addresses for every 25 reporters whenever I build a distribution list.

Meltwater's platform consistently out-performs others we trial when it comes to monitoring. Their customer support is unrivaled, and I've never seen anything like it from such a large company. Meltwater is on top of emerging trends and needs of PR practitioners both in terms of actually practicing PR *and* in terms of helping us show ROI to clients.

After we purchased the tool, our team was given a login and a training site, and then we were left to "dig in" for ourselves. After struggling with getting the tool implemented, I asked for a call and did get some assistance, but could use many more calls to learn the platform. There are lots of on-demand training, but with such a robust tool, it would be nice for some 1-1 training, especially for the price paid.I will say that when reaching out to their customer support team, they are extremely quick to respond or assist as they can.

Meltwater is definitely a more versatile tool than Cision. Cision's main purpose is to search for media contacts and create media lists, which it does a really good job of. I'm very comfortable with Cision which is why I use it even though Meltwater has this feature in addition to the media tracking that it is known for. But Cision is very one-sided whereas you can do a lot more things with Meltwater.

  • I'm only in the IT department so I'm not really sure about ROI but IA does much more than our marketing department is using it for. I would think the company is paying a lot of money for something that isn't being utilized.

  • I've yet to really see a way to measure ROI by using Meltwater.
  • We have a goal number of positive mentions by percentage that our organization strives to reach. Meltwater keeps excellent track of this.
  • I like what Meltwater does for us, but I don't see extreme positives or negatives in terms of business objectives. It is simply good for what I need it to do.
