Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Container Engine for Kubernetes (OKE) is very well suited if you are interested in deploying cloud native applications on Oracle Cloud ( OCI ) and need container support. OKE does not work well when you have some memory and compute bottlenecks that may require configuring the underlying cloud infrastructure to work in a specific way with the Kubernetes engine through OKE since configuration is harder with OKE.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Compute

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is well suited for working with Oracle Analytics Cloud-Essbase. Data processing is faster in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Compute, and Essbase can work magic with the high loads of data by taking less time. Security is another added advantage of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Compute.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Compute

  • Oracle Cloud is easy to set up, once login access is done.
  • It has all parts of the SOA app tier and DB tier we need.
  • Oracle helps us in migrating from on-prem to Oracle Cloud. We are using their partner services to do this.

Cons

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

  • Visual network designer would assistant in ensuring configuration matches intended design.
  • Automatic and seemless migration of VMs from OCI Classic to OCI would show that Oracle is taking cloud infrastructure service seriously.
  • Better, faster support. Traditional methods of filing SRs date back to the 1980s. Online realitime chat with support that know what they're doing is critical.
  • One click template image load from Oracle Cloud Marketplace is basic omission. It's available for oci-c but not oci.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Compute

  • Instance page needs to add a filter to only show an instance for a specific VCN.
  • Instance page needs to show public and private IPs in a summary page so that user does not need to click into each of them to see the IP.

Alternatives Considered

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

We have selected Oracle Cloud Infrastructure mainly because of the native support for Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse, which is our preferred choice for data storage in the case of our newest products. Another important factor was the Ravello service allowing us to deploy our existing VMware data center workloads without any modification to the currently configured virtual machines and network.

I have evaluated Amazon Cloud. They are a lot better regarding support. Oracle has the best solution but just needs to get a better support team.

Return on Investment

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

  • We have an internal chargeback for infrastructure and we anticipate the cost factor will be neutral.
  • We have been impressed with the provisioning aspect of OCI and expect it to save on data center staff.
  • The scalability of OCI has been a timesaver for our environments.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Compute

  • We have been utilizing this for the past 2 years and we've seen some ROI compared to our On-Prem solution.
  • Positive impact on our business.
  • Overall, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Compute is playing a key roll in our infrastructure and we may increase the use of it for other apps going forward.
