Pentaho

The tool is fast, visually attractive and intuitive to use, but we also have an implementation of Qlik Sense and Pentaho pales in comparison to the overall capabilities. I recommend the tool, but everyone’s solution need is unique, so it may not be the right fit. Larger tools like Qlik are more versatile and easier to recommend. More expensive, yes, but you usually get what you pay for.

TIBCO Jaspersoft

Well suited for formatting needs and specific export types.
Great for creating static scheduled reports because they are easily editable by non-developers.
Less suited for non-developer level users if looking for an ad hoc tool as I believe they still need to do more work in making the ease-of-use of their ad hoc tool so that it is more accessible to entry-level users to reporting software.

Pros

  • Easy to create simple jobs and transformations
  • Mature data access and data transformation capabilities
  • Suitable for complex analytic use cases
  • Consume data from many sources
Ilham AB profile photo
  • Jaspersoft can be seamlessly embedded into web applications.
  • Jaspersoft is easily customized allowing nearly complete control over the reporting environment.
  • Jaspersoft is scalable allowing it to grow to meet the needs of our growing user base as our deployment rolls out across the country.
  • Jaspersoft is easy to learn for the report developer.
Ken Sparks profile photo

Cons

  • At first, one needs to learn the basic concept of this software before going for the implementation. Once you are an expert on this then you will rock it.
  • Some of the basic features need to be enhanced such as sharing and collaboration capabilities
  • Needs to support automatically generated analytic visualizations or models
Ilham AB profile photo
  • Community is quite large but it would be much more helpful if more experts could answer our questions
  • Their API is not that well documented
  • I would prefer some of the Pro features to exist on community edition as well, like for example HTML5 Charts

We have moved to homegrown ETL and have matured as a company as to what we need from a BI tool. Our focus is now rich and intuitive data visualization with blazing speed. Our customers had already used MicroStrategy/Tableau in the past so that bar was already set very high. Unfortunately Pentaho could not give us a better if not similar experience as the tools our Customers had already used.

Usability

Pentaho5.0

I would have liked some hands on help in trying to match what Customers were already used to. Plus having a team of Java/BI folks was difficult to assemble since what required to be done in an object oriented fashion could have easily been done via a SQL construct. This hash of technologies was difficult to manage.

Never have we had a performance issue with it. The "slow" reports are due to the speed of the data being returned from the database, not Jasper.

They respond quickly. Depending on the rep you get service can vary between amazing and "meh" but by the end you get what you need. It is just a matter of how many times you might have to clarify for the "meh" folks.

Course Taken: DI1000 Pentaho Data Integration FundamentalsSetup A week before your class started, the instructor will start sending out class material and lab setup instructions. This is helpful so that you understand how the environment is laid out and can start reviewing the content. Ultimately it saved about a 1/2 day trying to setup with 10 other people online which was great! The CourseThe 3-day course was laid out like many other technical classes with 15-30 minutes instruction and 15-60 minutes of lab exercises. The instructor was very knowledgeable with the functionality from version to version and answered questions as we went along. I was amazed at some of the functionality that was available that I was not using at the time and quickly implemented changes to many existing transformations and jobs. The novice users seemed to catch on quickly and more experienced users explained how some of the functionality was used in their home environments. Towards the end there was enough time so that we were able to ask very directed questions about our own environments. Overall, I really found the class to be informative and deliver enough information to be dangerous. My skills improved and I was able to design better and efficient transformations for the HIE. Resources available in the TIBCO Knowledge Base are covering almost everything. They are well organized, and covering almost every possibility. There is always the change to get back to the TIBCO support or to the dedicated Customer Success Manager whenever something very specific or bound to a customization is not covered.

Implementation

Pentaho5.0
Based on 1 answer
Get the right people in before starting implementation. Start small and build as you go approach is time consuming and involves lot of rework.Evangalize within the organization the capabilities and limitations equally so that correct delivery expectations are set.Set expectations with the Customer that the tool cannot replace proprietary software in terms of stability/usability and that timelines could change given the new ness of the product.

Breadth of Deployment

Typically system analysts, business analysts and departmental managers were our target audience. 10-15 users was the most we could reach before we decided to go with another suite of Products. But who ever used it did appreciate the end to end flow of data that they could see as opposed to the data obfuscation they noticed before.

Alternatives Considered

Since the Pentaho platform offers a range of broad functionality across data preparation and advanced analytics, it also can be easily integrated to support many data sources and machine-learning frameworks. Based on that fact, we selected Pentaho to be used in our internal department. It also supports many of our BI use cases as required by company management or the business user. Last but not least, the Pentaho license is cheaper than their competitor.

Tibco Jaspersoft is a stronger competitor than the Microsoft Reports and ETL products. The flexibility and power of using the software, multi platform and deployment and monitoring has no comparison to what you use.It would be interesting to integrate some features of predictive controls of Tibco Spotfire in Tibco Jaspersoft ETL and Jaspersoft Reports.More robust features in the BPM type documentation in the Job ETL.Also more features and types of Jobs of the different flavors of Talend products.

Collaboration and Sharing

Pentaho7.3

Pentaho checked all the boxes with respect to security, formatting of reports/dashboards, distribution etc. In terms of collaborative capabilities, features like annotation, 'users-who-saw-this-also-saw' capabilities were missing. In hindsight we would have liked workflow integration to have been tightly coupled with collaboration so that all users in the same business process would have benefited from each others work and not have to redo

Data Integration

This is one of the areas where I think pentaho has done a great job--and with every iteration of the product they seem to include more and more data sources to connect to. Given the data we've been working with, I don't think we've come across a situation yet where we haven't had a relatively simple connector to use.

Return on Investment

  • Pentaho has improved our overall business process.
  • Pentaho has helped the Managers and Directors to analyze the numbers going up and down from time to time.
  • We have a started a big project using Pentaho that is going to include all the business processes in the organization.

  • When we demo our Jaspersoft environment to potential clients, their eyes light up and they sit up in their chairs a bit more. A lot of our meetings have ended with with the client very interested in our product due to Jaspersoft.
  • Our existing clients have been very satisfied with the adhoc features of Jaspersoft. We've been able to provide them better access to their data on their terms instead of ours. Of course this turns into a huge win for us.
  • We've always used SQL Server Reporting Services to deliver our reports to our clients. Converting to Jaspersoft has allowed us to generate the reporting layer that our clients demand. They no longer feel like they are settling for what we offer.
