What is Schoology Learning?
Schoology, now a PowerSchool Unified Classroom product, is a learning management system (LMS). Schoology’s platform is built specifically for the needs of K-12 students, teachers, and administrators. Schoology aims to combine as many parts of the learning process as possible into a single platform. By doing this they aim to simplify the learning experience for students, parents, and teachers.
The Basic Package is free for instructors and includes features such as an Academic Activity Dashboard, Instructional Tools, and a Native Document Grader. The Enterprise Package includes the Basic Package and additional features such as Systemwide Administration, User Management, and Workload Planning.
PowerSchool acquired Schoology in late 2019.
Overview of Schoology Features
Schoology focuses on student mastery of learning objectives by offering a proficiency model of grading and traditional numeric grades. Through their online platform, it is simple to deliver assessments to students regardless of their location. Assessments are flexible and can be quick quizzes, locally-created benchmarks, or district-wide assessments.
Through Schoology’s built-in data and analytics, educators can determine what is working and what is not at several different levels. The reports generated give information at both the class and school level and can be used by teachers to determine how their students are doing, as well as administrators to ensure that all students school-wide are on track. Reports can be shared via a secure URL, and access is filtered based on staff permissions
Schoology aims to ensure effective communication between parents and educators. Teachers can send weekly digests about classroom activities. Parents can instantly access their students' grades to get an idea of their child’s full learning experience.
Per the vendor, Schoology is easy to use in combination with other learning tools and comes with over 200 native integrations. Educators can use said tools to quickly create assignments. Courses can be built from scratch, or educators can use Schoology’s content library that contains over 300 applications. Courses can be easily shared with other teachers or can be re-used across multiple academic years.
Collaboration is encouraged between teachers through the Public Groups pages on Schoology. These are community pages where educators can share ideas, ask questions and learn from each other.
Tailored Education Solutions
Schoology aims to create a highly tailored educational experience for students that ensures that they meet learning objectives in the way that works best for them. By offering personalized pacing, students can work through the material at the speed that suits their individual needs.
Educators also have the option of creating lessons that give students a choice in how they learn the material. Students can select the tasks that suit their learning style, and a grade for that lesson appears in the grade book, regardless of which task was selected.
Schoology also emphasizes the importance of collaboration between students, even in a remote learning environment. The Groups feature allows students to communicate and store resources about sports, clubs, etc. outside of their course modules.

(76-100 of 113)Learning Together With Schoology
- Schoology is an easy-to-learn, effective learning management system. It is particularly good at allowing teachers to provide blended, and individualized learning experiences.
- Schoology's open API allows flexibility, and adaptability for both the user and the organization. It is intended to accommodate and integrate, existing tools, not replace them.
- Schoology provides opportunities for learners, young and older, to extend learning beyond the time and space constraints of the traditional classroom.
- Schoology's learning communities are enthusiastic, generous, and collaborative.
- The "look" or appearance of Schoology is improving, but there is still room to improve the look and function of Schoology.
- I would like to see more capabilities for users to customize their Schoology experience. In particular, being able customize the features tied to the user's profile.
- Schoology could provide additional "help" options when hovering over buttons.
Schoology--A Powerful LMS
- Supports collaboration between stakeholders.
- Provides a central location to share resources.
- Supports differentiation of instruction.
- Promotes student engagement.
- The addition of more options to change the visual aspect of text.
Highly recommend Schoology!
- Ability to re-use materials year-to-year.
- Easy to customize the organization of your materials.
- More than a storage repository - great interactive features such as discussions and ability to record video/audio.
- Great ability to personalize grading setups - creation of custom grading scales, rubrics, and mastery learning objectives.
- Schoology has made many improvements in the 5 years I've used it.
- One area that needs work is the calendar feature. This is not as robust as their other elements.
- Schoology does allow rubric creation, and they are flexible with number of criteria, scales used, etc. But the creation tool is a bit clunky.
- Schoology has great question types for assessment, but it would be nice if it were easier to import questions from external sources.
- Schoology provides a "toolbox" to house all of the "tools" that teachers need access to in a 1:1 district. Assignments, assessments, rubrics, gradebook, feedback, calendar....all in one place!
- Schoology allows teachers to meet the needs of every student by personalizing instruction and meeting the needs of all learners.
- The ability to tie learning targets to questions makes it possible to know where students are at with their learning at all times.
- The tools that are at your fingertips in Schoology make it easy to take stagnant activities and make them engaging in no time!
- I would love a few more option in the Standards Based Grading Area of Mastery
- I think Rubrics for students to self-assess would be a great addition!
Level Up your teaching game with Schoology!
- Schoology's ease of use is its number 1 strength. It is user-friendly and takes only a short while for users to figure out how to add materials and get their class started on using this impressive LMS.
- Schoology's assessments are spot on and the ability to attach our standards to these assessments allows the teacher to see exactly how their students are progressing through the standards toward course/content mastery.
- Schoology's portfolios for student work is super easy to use and travels with the student. It is simply amazing
- I would love to see their badging could be set to automatically occur after students finish a learning pathway/student completion.
Schoology - The Easy to Use LMS
- Intuitive - easily learned.
- Aesthetically appealing - the layout of information is easy on the eyes. There isn't a "clutter" of information on the screen.
- Schoology needs peer assessment.
- Schoology needs a "plan book" (Curriculum mapping).
- Schoology needs a way to connect their plan book to assignments.
- Schoology needs a way to connect their (future) plan book to assignments.
Schoology - Your One Stop Shop for LMS
- Platform is grades K-12 friendly
- Program is intuitive and easy to use
- Wonderful app
- Schoology is always improving their product
- Great support staff
- When putting in assignments they do not always [appear] the way you have entered them in, but adding due dates will line them up in an order you want.
- Adding images takes several steps within assignments and tests.
Schoology - the only LMS you will ever need
- Intuitive platform. Based on Facebook, the usability of the program is fairly easy for all learning groups, from those in their 90s to their early teens.
- Flexibility. The ability to embed 3rd party apps allows students to have a more enhanced learning experience and for all types of learners to access the material.
- Community. Through groups and discussion boards all stakeholder groups (teachers, students) can learn from one another and create CoPs.
- Flexibility. The ability to embed many 3rd party apps to enhance the learning experience allows for numerous possibilities when it comes to student output and learning.
- Mobile. Schoology's app allows for students and teachers to work remotely thus truly flattening the traditional classroom walls.
- Community. Having access to 18 million users creates opportunities to have several CoPs (communities of practice) and build their PLNs (personalized learning networks).
Going to School with Schoology
For us, it streamlines our workflow. In the past, we've had teachers/staff working from several different platforms. It was difficult for staff to manage which system housed which set of information. Schoology has allowed us to ensure a one-stop shop for all school/work related items. If staff need bus schedules, curriculum content, online professional development, etc., they will find it all on Schoology. Schoology has addressed an organizational and management piece that was missing from our school system.
- Schoology allows for a variety of content to be embedded and uploaded into Schoology. From a teaching standpoint, this truly allows for personalization of learning. Teachers are able to offer multiple modalities of learning all through one platform. Students are given a voice and choice in how they want to demonstrate their learning, as a result of the aforementioned.
- Schoology continually grows and changes with their clients. As users request features, Schoology spends time researching and vetting these within the platform. In the three years we have used Schoology, we have noticed several new and positive changes. The changes Schoology has made have not been just to make changes, but rather to address the needs of the clientele. This shows that Schoology is willing to listen to its users and ready to adapt.
- Schoology is user friendly. We spent quite a bit of time researching and exploring other learning management system. We continually came back to the idea that Schoology would be easy enough for our staff to learn and adapt to. Most things are relatively straightforward, but Schoology has a robust help center, as well as a public resources center. The options to connect with other Schoology users are endless. As a result, it is easy to learn and continue to grow within the Schoology platform.
- It would be great to see Schoology continue to develop their mobile app. Their web version is great, but the mobile app lags behind. As a 1:1 iPad (K-8) school district, increasing this functionality would truly allow our students to use the app to its fullest potential.
- Schoology has a badging system which is perfect for gamification. However, those badges currently must be entered manually. While it is a not a game changer, automated badging would continue to improve the system. This would allow teachers/staff to create gamified and engaging courses.
- There are some minor gradebook enhancements that would also help to improve the functionality of Schoology. Despite the fact that users can create separate grade categories, there is no way to view the overall grade for just one specific category. The basic functionality of the gradebook is there, but there are minor adjustments that would truly make the platform robust.
- Schoology does not integrate with Campus, which is our current system for grading. This would be a huge help to us, as just another way to make workflow more efficient.
Schoology - Simply the Best LMS!!
- Ease of use for teachers, students and parents. Very low learning curve for class and content creation.
- The Schoology Educators community is an active, robust group that share ideas on everything from troubleshooting to lesson plan sharing.
- Easy integration with many tools including: Google, Nearpod, Youtube and much more.
- Outstanding customer service!
- Some small issues: Being able to lock entire folders, test/quiz feature ability to edit question more easily.
Schoology Review
- Schoology not only allows you to connect with your students it also allows you to connect with fellow educators from around the world.
- Schoology is very easy to use and maintain.
- The calendar feature is incredibly helpful for students.
- There are a few minor features that I'd like to see added, but Schoology continues to improve their product on a regular basis. It is a good time to be using Schoology with new assessment features coming out and new Google Drive integration!
Flexible, fully-featured and fun!
- A huge community of teachers and learners looking to sharing their experience and support one another in the usage of the platform.
- A recognisable user interface which makes the learning curve for new users simple and intuitive.
- Superb flexibility to create bespoke learning environments for teachers and learners.
- Some limitation of iframe embed due to the HTTPS protocol requirement. Use of HTML code editor often strips the inclusion of more advanced features such as Java functions.
- Limitation toe badge and gamification of learning.
- Currently, the Assessments tools are limited (new tools coming for 2017) and LTI integration not fully functional, relying on apps developers to plug the gaps.
- Allowing for many different types of activities to be accessible 24/7.
- Integration with Google Drive and Microsoft One Note.
- Being device agnostic.
- Ease of use by both students and staff.
- Response time to tickets.
- Badging could be improved if there was a way to bulk manage them and if they would auto assign.
Schoology for Modern Education
- Schoology is a powerful and efficient collaborative tool. It provides an easy to use platform for sharing conversation, ideas, and resources.
- Schoology is a virtual classroom that supports blended learning or full virtual learning.
- Schoology is great for creating self grading assessments.
- Schoology will make huge strides when it fully integrates Google Docs into the platform, which will reduce the overall workflow.
- Schoology can improve test/quiz items by providing additional interactive question types.
- Schoology can improve performance by creating a more robust data dash board.
Schoology - A K-12 LMS
- Digital content sharing
- Digital Assessment Options
- Digital Community and Online PLCs
- Badging system is not open.
- The ability to export and printing out rubrics and tests (can do this but it takes up a lot of space) but for students without computer access.
- Has several mobile apps but they all don't function the same (i.e. iOS users can edit items in their Schoology calendars while Android users cannot.).
- One stop shop! Schoology allows their users not to venture far from the website. Many sites are embeddable including YouTube and other Google products. This allows our students to stay on one site without getting lost through the many steps of the internet.
- Groups! Schoology gives teachers the ability to collaborate with their groups function.
- Public resources! Do you need a lesson plan for 7th grade social studies? Check out Schoology's public resources to see how other teachers have taught specific subject matter.
- Organization of resources in groups. More functions can be added to sort resources when you are in the groups section.
The Best LMS!
- Schoology has wonderful organizational features. The layout is easy to understand and almost everything can be color-coded.
- Schoology has multiple ways to provide information such as updates, discussions, and media albums. You can also add files, links, and video/audio recordings made directly within the platform.
- Schoology's calendar is user-friendly and any changes made from the administrative side are also changed for the members, keeping everyone updated in real time.
- There are layers to the multiple features of Schoology. Something can seem so basic, but it's deceptively simple: there always seems to be more you can do with the information you're imparting, such as leveling the language for readers of different competencies.
- At the moment, there are no notifications provided for Group Discussions, but it is something I know Schoology is working to fix.
- Also at the moment, there is a limitation to how long a video file may be left unsubmitted within a Test/Quiz before it becomes corrupted and must be redone. Schoology is also aware of and working on this issue.
Schoology: For The Win
- Schoology handles communications and notifications beautifully. Keeps everyone informed in a classroom of what is going on and who has posted what.
- Additional third party applications are awesome. No need to sign out to use Google, TurnitIn, Khan Academy, etc. They are built in giving users access to the tools they use most within the LMS.
- Roster automation is great. This has reduced the backend load of technicians and data experts having to organize files from the SIS to import on a scheduled task rotation. A few clicks and you are ready for the school year to begin.
- Gradebook sync needs some help. Schoology updates the platform frequently which is good, but not all key problem areas are addressed in each update. They could raise this rating a bit by getting back to core functionality resolutions first, then added user experiences second.
- Schoology's ease of use is amazing. Teachers need very little professional development in order to become proficient users. It is very intuitive, which helps teachers discover functionalities on their own.
- Schoology's support is the best I have ever experienced. Any users has several supports, from joining the Schoology Educators Group, use of a comprehensive knowledge base system, to being able to submit a ticket with a less than a day turn around. Schoology is a company that truly stands behind their product by making customer service and support a priority.
- Schoology is consistently improving. They recognize that their product must evolve with their customers
- Would love to see (coming soon I hear) is a better way to collect/rate users suggestions for improvements.
Schoology is not just for schools
- The overall layout and the logic for the tools are very intuitive; it's easy to find and use the tools in Schoology. I received a one hour training on how to use Schoology from a Schoology representative and from there, I was able to figure out what I needed to do to set up courses, the grade book, etc... There are so many resources online to help me figure out how to do what I need.
- Schoology tools keep improving! For example, when I first started using Schoology, copying courses was a manual process (I had to enter every assignment due date in the copied courses). Now I can choose to duplicate everything in a course; copying courses now take less than 5 minutes each. This extremely helpful when you have to create the exact same course 15 times.
- The Schoology support team is very helpful and prompted; every time I submit a case online, I get a response within the same day. They either let me know what's going on if there is an issue across all of Schoology or help me address the concerns I have with my organization's Schoology account.
- This summer, there were many instances of Schoology not working well in certain offices; apparently the wireless/security setup at one of our training sites was interfering with access to Schoology and our staff and students experienced delays when loading Schoology pages or sometimes Schoology did not load at all. Schoology was unable to help with this because the concern was on our end.
- Schoology moves quickly to make updates to the site, however, it can be hard to keep up. This summer, I realized that administrative admins for the entire "school" can create grading periods; we have five "buildings" and admins of those buildings need to be able to create their own grading periods, which are all different. This was an update that I didn't know until our building admins were unable to create grading periods. Had we known earlier, we would've planned for it; this delayed course creations at all of our sites. It is very easy for updates to get lost in the Schoology newsletters; there should be a more effective way of communicating changes/updates, especially to enterprise users.
I love Schoology, If I could marry it, I would!
- We love being able to copy courses from semester to semester so that we don't have to redo all of the work each semester.
- Schoology is really easy to learn, there's not much training needed for new users.
- The platform is really fun for students to use.
- We would like to be able to tie the gradebook in with our current gradebook.
- We don't like the attendance feature.
Schoolgy is MUST for all K-12 educators!
- Online quizzes and tests, with custom question banks and the ability to import from Blackboard or test generators
- Updates and communication; looks and works like Facebook
- Being a 1-to-1 school with many different devices, Schoology works on all platforms and works very well
- Syncing between Schoology and our School Information System (SIS) has not been very smooth. Syncing can be hit-or-miss, and it does not sync Standard Based Grades.
Schoology-for parents, students, and educators.
- Easy to create assessments for online courses
- Keeps all information in one place
- Easy as a parent to access information about students
- I would have liked more technical support as I was first learning how to use it
- More layout options for assesssments
Schoology for Successful LMS Integration
- Schoology has a fantastic user support system. Whether through email, social media, or the help center, the people at Schoology do their best to communicate and support their users.
- The Schoology LMS has clearly been made with the needs of individual learners in mind. The ability to create and assign course content to specific groups within a course helps to properly reach special education students, gifted students, and everyone in between.
- The Schoology App allows teachers to utilize old-school and new-school grading techniques with the ability to grade assignments online and utilize a stylus for adding feedback.
- The ability to submit and grade assignments online helps teachers to avoid hours spent at a copy machine as well as stacks of papers that must be graded and passed back to students. Once an assignment is graded on Schoology it is immediately documented in the gradebook and students are notified of a newly graded item.
- The Schoology App needs to better reflect the desktop version. For example, functions such as badges and portfolios need to be made available through the app.
- Assignment averages need to be made available for a single section of a course, not just or the course as a whole. This information is needed in order to help students during the process of writing IEP's and PRO6 reports.
- When grading in the app, a dual screen feature would be helpful in allowing the teacher to see both the assignment being graded and the rubric being used to grade, at the same time.
