We have seen a dramatic decrease in successful phishing attacks, particularly those targeting privileged accounts. This has helped mitigate the risk of ransomware and account take overs. As the head of IT security, I've seen firsthand the positive impact of deploying YubiKeys.By requiring a physical YubiKey as a second factor, we've made it extremely difficult for external attackers to gain access to employee accounts, even if they manage to steal passwords. Phishing campaigns and ransomware attacks are far less effective when strong multi-factor authentication exists. It has greatly reduced the likelihood of successful phishing attacks, makes MFA easier for end users (better experience equals users will comply with security controls), and helps secure applications by providing out-of-the-box compatibility with modern web browsers. Our overall risk exposure and attack surface have diminished to allow secure authentications from anywhere in the world.

Obviously it greatly decreases the chance of compromise. Securing an account with a security key never guarantees protection, but greatly decreases the chance of an account breach. My providing protection against MITM attacks and phishing resistance, we believe that we have an increased security level and are better protected against most forms of common breach.

There have been zero security incidents regarding accounts secured with Yubico YubiKeys since we started using the Yubico YubiKeys. We've never had to trade security for convenience and it comes at a great cost so it's easy to implement. Tie it to another 2FA method like TOTP (Time-based One-Time Passwords) and you're good to go.

Yubikeys significantly reduce the amount of exposure to account takeover. This also satisfies regulatory requirements for 2FA on specific high risk accounts. As an added bonus, most large companies support integration of Yubikeys into their online applications further increasing security and reducing attack surface. New Yubikeys also support NFC 2FA making for additional security for phones where plugging in a key isn't really an option.
