Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We used it to aggregate vehicle data sent from sensors into more meaningful chunks that could then be used to feed our user interfaces and web dashboards and tables

Pros and Cons

Key value data was easy to collect, store, search and extend
DynamoDB is very easy to pickup for anyone

Query parameters can sometimes be a little hard to understand
Aggregations are not the friendliest

Return on Investment

We were able to spin up proof of concept applications fairly easily
No need for a DBA as any developer could easily create and use a database
Integrations into an existing application or ecosystem was fairly easy

Scalability

Very scalable. No need to manage any infrastructure outside of creating and initial setup. Cost is negligible. Throughput and performance is incredible.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon DocumentDB (with MongoDB compatibility) and Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS)

DynamoDB provided an easy to use, schema-less, out of the box solution that can be used to spin up a full working implementation very easily. It doesn't require extra knowledge such as MongoDB query functions

It is fantastic for creating and integrating as a new datastore into an existing application or in a new application. It is easy to interact with especially in the AWS ecosystem when being queried from a lambda or an ECS/EC2 instance
