Overall Satisfaction with Avalara

We are using this across the whole organization. We have nexus in all states and it does a great job of charging our customers sales tax and filing our sales tax returns.
  • Keep track of the ever evolving sales tax changes
  • Manage our Exemption Certificates
  • Calculates not just the state sales tax but also the many jurisdictions/counties, etc within the state
  • We have had some API issues that certain customers numbers fail for unknown reasons, we have worked with Avalara support and they have a fix to roll out early December
  • We use to get "canned" answers to support questions, quick to offer a work instruction when we really wanted to talk to someone. Moving up to a dedicated TM resolve this issue.
  • We were audited by California and we had 2 years in Avalara and 1 year not. The Avalara information was much easier and quicker to retrieve.
  • We have not been audited since we implemented Cert Capture, but I am sure the auditor will be much happier with the certs we have on file in Cert Capture as opposed to the 98 notebook binders we had in the past.
  • CRUSH is a must, we have come back with ideas and uses that we maybe were not aware of before going. Every CRUSH we have attended has more than paid for itself.

It was easy to integrate. We have had API issues in the past, but once we got a dedicated TM, these issues are resolved quicker and they have a fix that they will be rolling out in early December.
I fall short of giving it a 10 because of the API issues we have had and the time taken to identify and resolve. The system overall works very well, if simple to use and it's like any other system - when it's working it is seamless and great, when it's not - customer support has to be involved and until we got a TM, our support person answer for everything was put in a ticket. Seemed to be on her auto response email. Avalara listened and is working on getting us a different support person.

We are in all states and jurisdictions. It would take additional headcount to work part time in order to get all the returns submitted and paid on time. Alabama alone took me a day to file because all jurisdictions required a separate return. The Cert Capture makes it easier to manage our certs instead of having 98 3 inch binders that we had to review for expiration dates and verify we had customers certs on file before shipping.
We looked at another one, but don't remember the name. It was more expensive and didn't have the capabilities that Avalara had when we started our review of software.
There is no way that we could manage the multiple jurisdiction and state sales tax and charge our customers correctly. We have nexus in all states and would have to hire multiple staff to handle this in house.
