Power Systems Virtual Server on IBM Cloud for IBMi

Overall Satisfaction with IBM Power Virtual Server

I use IBM Power Virtual Server to deploy and host high transaction applications for my company since it offers me exceptional security at every step of the way and also the desired robustness from highly confidential and complex applications.
It is a scalable, secure, reliable and cost-effective solution that provides the comfort of an ideal cloud hosting solution.
  • Handling highly transactional applications with great performance. Ou applications have thousands of transactions per minute and it almost never feels overwhelming, thanks to the scalability and resource optimization of the cloud.
  • Well thought pay as you go model to get the best out of the compute resources for every cent charged.
  • Advanced resource monitoring via IBM Instana Observability is extremely helpful for automated monitoring, alerting and troubleshooting a wide range of infrastructure issues.
  • Usability and learning efforts required for it can be simplified greatly.
  • Integration support range can be widened from currently limited options. Many of the popular services are still not supported for this cloud.
  • Mobile application/interface has a lot of room for improvement to make it more robust and user friendly.
  • High availability of the application hosted in IBM cloud with network resources helped in keeping the applications up and running with 100% uptime.
  • Even though it came with minimum 12 months registration, the overall cost for the infrastructure was at least 15% lesser than Azure, the predecessor for hosting our applications.
Yes, I have found IBM cloud resources and services to be more reliable than other prominent cloud services in the market. It has notable infrastructure backbone and fabulous network infrastructure to ensure seamless connectivity in and out of the IBM cloud components.
I have found the overall network performance to be at par when compared to Azure network and firewall performance which is a major market player worldwide.
Honestly, the usability is one of the negative factors of the IBM cloud. One can find AWS Cloud Console, Azure Portal much easier to use when compared to IBM's cloud management console. For the developers and administrators, it might be much easier however, it demands a considerable learning shift to become proficient with this cloud front end.
Our team had evaluated IBM cloud along with Azure, AWS, GCP and Alibaba cloud providers based on our previous experience and we were stunned after only couple of months of usage with the IBM Power Virtual servers for its value for money as well as robust performance and the setbacks (more like additional efforts) were mostly related to getting comfortable with learning and using IBM cloud services. Overall it has been a great experience for our team to have chosen and used IBM cloud.
I will certainly look forward to reuse it in future and would love to see it getting transitioned into an extremely easy to use cloud platform in times to come.

Yes

Well suited and ideal for security critical and mission critical applications where performance, stability and availability are crucial. One of the best choices available for maintaining cost effective critical solutions.

Less suited to migrate from other popular public cloud services like AWS, Azure etc., due to broad learning curve for using the cloud services.
