Overall Satisfaction with Linode

We use Linode because of its amazing datacenter distribution around the world, especially in Asia/Pacific. We use it for edge networking as part of our content delivery network.

We can quickly grow and scale our infrastructure by only relying on open source technologies without becoming victims of vendor lock-in.
  • Quick VPS provisioning.
  • Good datacenter distribution.
  • Open source technologies and open standards (no vendor lock-in).
  • Good performance.
  • More datacenters in Europe.
  • Advanced networking features (i.e. BGP, AnyCast and private intra-region networks).
  • Object storage auto-replication across regions.
  • Managed databases.
  • Hosted mirrors for more Linux distributions.
  • Fast VPS provisioning in multiple regions to address specific needs (i.e. during a traffic peak).
  • Decent performance even on cheaper tiers to spare some money.
Vultr has probably the best datacenter distribution in America and Europe, and even Oceania is very well covered. Unfortunately it lacks an Indian datacenter, and performance is poor in some locations. it lacks support for some services like Kubernetes and object storage (currently only one location) but it is an awesome alternative to Linode, with bare metal and advanced networking options.

Lightsail offers cheap and easy to use (easy to pay) servers on AWS, with many datacenters and multiple locations on each region. Unfortunately performance is poor unless you pay extra bucks for it.

DigitalOcean is very famous, supports multiple datacenters in some regions, has many managed services, CDN support for its object storage and it is as easy as Linode. It supports the creation of projects, with autonomous resources that can be handled by multiple users easily without mixing personal servers with those of multiple clients. Unfortunately it has poor Asia/Pacific coverage, but the service is awesome.
They know what they do, and they gave fast and good answers.
If you are a skilled sysadmin, you will love them.
We feel we own our infrastructure. Other services are cheaper (i.e. OVH) while providing similar services, but we really enjoy the Linode mission and we like the idea of hosting most of our infra on it.
We tend to develop our infra to be less reliant on a single server, but even if our infra can survive a region downtime, we have never seen such incidents on our Linodes, and the reliability of the infra was surprising on most of the regions.

Mumbai gave us some issues, but it was a year ago, and after what we believe was a hardware upgrade, India became reliable as much as the other regions.
Linode is perfect everywhere a cloud server is needed, especially if you want to choose where to place your data, either for GDPR compliance or to put it near your users.

I think it is less appropriate in contexts where advanced features like auto-scaling, dedicated hardware or advanced networking are required, or where more managed services (like databases) are needed.
