Overall Satisfaction with Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention

Our organization uses Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention, communication compliance, data lifecycle management and much more. DLP being an advanced and important offering is used to prevent sensitive org. data being leaked or stolen during the transit (inter or intra-org) or even while at rest. The scope of our use case is both internal as well as managing it for our clients right from on-boarding to administration and implementing.
  • Adaptive Protection is one of the coolest capabilities in Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention especially from the aspect of DLP. Over time, it starts analyzing risky documents and/or contents in the M365 (or O365) environment and starts securing them automatically based on the current available settings.
  • The wide variety of options while creating policies helps in covering number of different scenarios and thus offers more secure and broader coverage of content.
  • Activity explorer (specifically Analytics) provides a very helpful and informative bird's eye view of all the activities happening around while ensuring a provision of being notified in real time about any suspicious activity.
  • In case of bulk file operations, DLP has been found to be a bit laggy for few of our clients. These were mostly inter-organizational data transfer/access.
  • I'd like to see and experience a much tighter integration between purview DLP and endpoint DLP in MDE. Ideally, they should coexist at the same place (although the current positioning is also not entirely wrong).
  • I'd like to get a more action oriented version of DLP, even though the abbreviation does mention prevention. If the label goes along the document, I should be able to control even after being sent away.
  • Most fruitful ROI has been user awareness through policy tips.
  • Another helpful ROI has been a good sanitization habit of classifying the document or correcting the classification of documents across the organization.
  • We have been able to limit and reduce data exfiltration by a staggering 75% in the past 7 month only.
Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention being a part of and XDR solution much more in-depth logging, activity timeline and hence a better incident management and response experience. A fantastic addition and a great advantage of other DLP solutions for Purview DLP is the ability to also cover cloud resources like storage accounts and databases for sensitive data discovery. The ease of authoring DLP policies is much less complex than other DLP solutions both programmatically and manually.
While I was not directly a part of the migration, I can say that the policy migration has been pretty smooth given the wide variety of options in the policy configurations menu. The dashboard migration wasn't possible because Purview DLP provides its own kind of overview dashboard without any scope of customizing.

I'd definitely like to see website Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention feature coming in because it is something that many of the DLP providers are already providing. Microsoft can very easily support this at least for Edge and Chrome (it being a managed app in Intune, makes this a possibility) to start with and then maybe expanding to other browsers.
Symantec is very loose on covering the channels of data leak sources. The integration of data sources in Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention is way too easier and has a great UX over any other DLP solutions. The automatic discovery of sensitive data through adaptive protection takes a good edge over the other traditional solutions that only depends on manual configurations.

Would you buy Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention again?

Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention should be your choice if you are a part of the O365/M365 ecosystem. Nothing better will suit your need of protecting sensitive data here. If you do not have tech-savvy core team, Purview DLP can almost give you an auto-pilot experience after the initial setup. Much less administration required. While Purview DLP supports some connections, if you are already employing a 3rd party email/endpoint protection software, look for a sibling product there, Purview DLP standalone doesn't works very well.
