Overall Satisfaction with Read&Write

I teach at a private school for students with learning disabilities. Read&Write allows us to offer a variety of assistive technology tools to our students as well as give teachers and adults the ability to do our own work more efficiently.
  • text-to-speech is great. lots of options for voices and speed
  • gives both word prediction and talk&type as writing supports
  • the fact that it is a toolbar that can be used in native programs is huge for our students because it allows them to be independent in their learning activities
  • Read&Write is very intuitive and requires very little training for the text-to-speech tools so it is very easy to train students and staff
  • I wish the Check It tool was available on the web (only in GDocs currently)
  • I wish the highlighter/collect highlights would collect citation information (kind of a combination of MyBib and highlighters)
  • One weird thing with the Reading tools (text-to-speech) is that if you are zoomed in to FIT on a GDoc it does glitchy stuff (skipping or not displaying) vs when you are at 100% zoom
  • why isn't Rewordify in Read&Write in a Google Doc? only on web version? Same for Simplify text tool.
  • It has been invaluable to us as a school of LD students to be able to provide a wide variety of tools that students can use very easily. It allows our students to be more independent in their learning which is the ultimate goal of any assistive technology tools. Knowing our students have tools that they can continue to use on their own outside of class is super important for us to grow adults with LD who can transition into the workplace knowing what tools are available to them.
I've contacted support numerous times over the years and always got a quick response and explanation and help for the issue. They have all been great in their feedback and response.
This is super important to us because of who we are as a private school for students with learning disabilities. We all have different needs as learners and my job is to expose students to assistive technology tools that may help them, while students must determine which specific tools will help them the most. Read&Write offers so many options to allow most of our students to find a tool or multiple tools that can help them be successful. Since we use a variety of devices and platforms, the fact that students don't need to learn different tools is great to allow for consistency.
I really think that Read&Write outshines the competitors. Its variety of tools offers so many options to so many students/people. Some of the other tools were cumbersome, only worked on installed programs like MS Word or only worked in its own environment. Read&Write works anywhere so there are literally no limitations to its use.

I've used and tested many assistive technology tools for decades and Read&Write is easy to use, easy to train users to use, and has enough of a variety of tools to allow users with a variety of learning disabilities and needs to find a tool that works for them. As a teacher, the fact that students can independently use these tools to complete assignments in class is great.

Using Read&Write

90 - They are mostly students who use Read&Write to complete school work.
2 - Ed Tech Directors on both of our campus support Read & Write and it requires very little management besides initial short training period. We have students 1st-12th grade use Read&Write after 2-3 15-30 min training sessions.
  • It allows students read above grade level by listening to text.
  • It allows students with poor spelling and writing skills use speech-to-text and word prediction tools to write independently
  • It allows staff to use speech-to-text for sending emails or creating documents to be more efficient.
