Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Sigma to create visualizations and dashboards for data that is stored on Snowflake. We also embed Sigma's dashboard into our business intelligence platform. Sigma is used to create joins on data tables too to create data sets.

Self-Service Analytics

Business users are able to get access to our Sigma dashboards through embeds and guest user accounts. This allows them to manipulate data of 1OOMs of rows without even knowing they are! Furthermore, the row access controls restrict them to only seeing their data and keeping other clients' data secure. One dashboard is delivered to multiple clients using row access controls.

Ad Hoc Analytics

Yes. The ability to quickly join datasets and spin up dashboards has made Sigma a great data exploration tool. This allows us and our clients to get a more nuanced understanding of their data in real-time. Often we "hide" the data tables and only allow them to view the visualizations.

Alternatives Considered

Looker, Tableau Desktop and Microsoft Power BI

Sigma was chosen for three reasons. 1. Excel-like workflow. Many of our researchers have a background in excel, and the excel-like workflow Sigma offers enabled them to get up and running quickly. 2. Embeds. We can easily embed dashboards into our SAS platform 3. Price. Sigma was about 50% of the competition.

Likelihood to Recommend

Very good a quickly spinning up dashboards and visualization for people familiar with excel. Most of my colleagues who are good with Excel quickly picked up Sigma. Materialized views are very helpful when trying to work with large data sets that need logic. Complex joins and data truncating are often better done at the data warehouse level because Sigma will time out often if the join is too much.
