Overall Satisfaction with The Okta Identity Cloud

We are a Catholic Diocese that spans many organizations and fifty-seven schools crossing both Primary and Secondary. In total we have greater than 30,000 users to manage. As you can [expect] with this number of students and staff to manage, we needed a platform that would be a cog in the large wheel of management and ensure a seamless experience for all users when accessing the 50+ apps that we have integrated.
  • We utilize the Dynamic groups to auto assign users permissions to systems and apps.
  • Simplicity of adding apps using the Okta Integration Network (OIN) of apps.
  • Fast deployment of a user to all required apps.
  • Great control of security, including reports to troubleshoot user issues.
  • I think Security features should be default for all. It's important to provide the best available and assist with minimizing management when troubleshooting.
  • Small business offerings.
  • Too many required upgrade bolt-ons. I would like to see some of these combined as offerings.
  • Our rollout utilized custom SCIM / Boomi environments which did take some time to deploy, but going live was seamless.
  • It removed a lot a service desk calls because [Okta Identity Cloud] works with so many apps.
  • It also improved security posture, as it makes Office365 hack attempts more visible, much better since going all in on modern auth[orization] too.
We use AD Mastered management, so mostly the Identity Platform syncs [are] all we need and we use that to automate and provision users into the 50+ apps. The personal information can be passed via SSO to ensure the apps profiles or permissions are correctly provisioning the user automatically. Take a look through the OIN to determine apps that will allow extra provisioning tasks.
I must say we haven't needed them very often. Mostly in the early days when I was understanding the security posture and attacks, then Okta's rolling updates solved all of that for us. They were more than willing to look at solutions and configurations of available options currently in our grasp until the updates became available. There [is] certainly learning when you first take up the platform, but it is awesome to work with and the support team are only more than happy to make that experience as exceptional as they can.
With over 30,000 users, we found that on return from school holidays we did hit the maximum of available "per second" connection[s]. occasionally. Okta ha[s] a feature to increase this and since then we haven't had the issue. We later found that the Wi-Fi with Aruba was causing multiple connections adding to exceeding the limit.
This is subjective to your own experience, but I do find Okta is far simpler to setup, connect with apps and use. Okta is the front runner in gartner for a reason, Microsoft is improving but [is] still complicated. When choosing apps for your business, consider the ease of use as a massive benefit as it allows the app to get out of the way of getting on with business.
SSO and provisioning makes users happy and admins excited.
