Overall Satisfaction with Unitrends Data Center Backup and Recovery

We currently use Unitrends Backup and Recovery to cover our entire infrastructure's disaster recovery needs. We use Citrix Hypervisor as our backbone for our infrastructure and backup VMs and MSSQL databases at the guest level. When we were sold Unitrends in April of 2018, we were told of their excellent Citrix Hypervisor (then Citrix XenServer) support. At the time, this wasn't entirely untrue, but we were sort of misled as to the capabilities of what were sold in that respect. We bought a Unitrends Recovery Appliance with 26TB of storage and proceeded to deploy it in our infrastructure. Only when it was all deployed did I realize that I could not add our Xen pool to the appliance as a backup source. It was then that I did a little research and found that all of the Xen backups have to be done by a backup appliance deployed in the Xen environment. This made our 26TB of storage that we bought on our appliance next to useless as we couldn't use that storage as backup storage for the Xen appliance. So we moved to guest VM backups at the file level and SQL backups, because those took advantage of our purchased storage. Some time passed and I did test out and use the Xen appliance a little bit. It worked great for the testing that I did, I just did not have storage for it. Now that we are on Citrix Hypervisor 8.2, it has become clear that Unitrends does not care about Citrix Hypervisor support. The last supported version is XenServer 7.3, which was released in December of 2017. Unitrends has moved to only support LTS released of Citrix Hypervisor, which is understandable from a development and support view. However, Citrix Hypervisor 8.2 LTSR has been released since August of 2020 and there has been NO update to the appliance and I have received answers that it is not on the roadmap. I cannot even get the current appliance to work because it checks the XenServer version when you try to add a hypervisor to it and because it is >7.3, it errors out with "Version not supported." I have 100 VMs and 4 SQL servers that need to be backed up, tested, and restored. This is a mammoth of a process when I'm using agent-level backups, especially when I could be communicating with 8 servers instead of 100 VMs. I'm left to conclude that Unitrends will not be supporting Citrix Hypervisor in the future and as our entire infrastructure runs on that, I will be evaluating competing solutions to replace it.
  • SQL backups.
  • File-level backups.
  • Hyper-V backups and restores.
  • Citrix Hypervisor support.
  • Samba 3.0 solution.
  • Windows security issue with appliance shares.
  • Time spent trying to make Citrix Hypervisor work.
  • Time spent looking for other solutions to replace it.
  • Time spent trying to get shareable and readable reports out of it.

Do you think Unitrends delivers good value for the price?

Not sure

Are you happy with Unitrends's feature set?

No

Did Unitrends live up to sales and marketing promises?

No

Did implementation of Unitrends go as expected?

No

Would you buy Unitrends again?

No

If you have a VMWare or Hyper-V shop, Unitrends will work great for you. They support hypervisor-level backups on these environments and they do work great (at least for Hyper-V, which is the only one of the two I have any experience with).

If, however, you are on any other hypervisor (especially Citrix Hypervisor), it would suit you better to find a different solution.
