Overall Satisfaction with Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance
Our Unitrends appliance is being used as our primary backup utility throughout the company, for both our virtual environment and physical machines. It has turned what used to be a manual process of verifying backup integrity, rotating tapes, and a manual archive cycle into an automated process and needs very little man hours to manage.
- Set it and forget it, we very rarely have issues with backups failing.
- Easy to add systems and create new schedules (once you're familiar with their methods).
- Very fast recovery times (once you're familiar with their methods).
- The interface is quite different from other solutions I have used in the past. There were a couple days of confusion as I learned where everything was and read all the documentation. The confusion was great enough that I would have paid for some professional services type training if it was offered even though I normally am comfortable figuring things out myself. I have since grown to love their interface and processes.
- I've purchased two of their units based on sizing recommendations given by their sales reps, both times the units were undersized. I strongly suggest going one step larger than what you are quoted, to be safe. However, their upgrade process is killer. It was pretty much hands off for me, and they gave me credit for the value of the unit I'd already purchased.
- Backup management used to take up 3 hours a day 5 days a week for a 45,000 dollar a year employee. We now see about 1.5 hours a week spent on backups. Quick math says that's about 15,000 dollars a year in man hours saved in the first year.
- We can restore files in minutes when a problem is experienced, where our tape solution required hours to find the right tape and extract the data.
- We've used our Unitrends system to recover from Ransomware issues twice in the past 2 years, While we were able to catch the infections early, our unitrends system was also a key component in getting us back up in running quickly.
Unitrends was able to give us a feature set unmatched in its price range. Their support was fantastic while we were playing with our demo and the professionalism of every representative we spoke with was a comfort.
