It is very helpful for budgeting and reporting. I love how easy it is to automate reports and presentations. It can be more difficult to plan specific activities. It feels more high-level than activity-level. It shows totals rather than individual transactions (either past or future transactions).

Cap IQ is well suited for analyzing security pricing and valuation, tracking stock performance over time, looking up comparable transactions, and analyzing valuations on an industry basis. The service is also well suited for charting and data analysis purposes.

Pros

  • I love how easy it is to track software and general amortizations in Adaptive. The software has been an issue with my past employers, but it flows very easily here in Adaptive.
  • We also use Adaptive's OfficeConnect for easy reporting. It has helped us automate our reporting as we work with internal departments. We have the reports built, and the software and can refresh all of them simultaneously, reducing generation time and giving us more time for analysis.
  • We are building out more operational metrics now. We are starting to track sales opportunities across different business segments to see the correlation between spending activities and opportunity generation. This helps us set better targets in the future. This paired with OfficeConnect also makes it very easy to track and report on operational metrics in addition to financial metrics.

  • You can use it on any device, and do not have to go to a terminal and leave your desk.
  • Interactive PDF reports can be exported, Bloomberg is not that good at this.
  • Balance sheets, Profit & Loss Statements and so on.

Cons

  • It can get cumbersome to have separate sheets for all prepaid expenses. The software works out very neatly - but creating a new sheet for each prepaid expense can be difficult. Because of this, I feel like forecasting is less based on actual plans, and more based on gut feelings, and trends rather than actual plans.
  • I wish OfficeConnect could pull individual lines rather than just aggregated data. The example that I'm trying to work on now is that I would like to pull personnel information from OfficeConnect (mainly pulling lists of employees, or open positions). I don't know how to do that currently. I can pull aggregated data and show totals - but I can't see the individual lines that make up that total within OfficeConnect.

  • Sources. In Bloomberg, when you click on a figure anywhere it leads you to the source. That is a great feature, as in finance everything has to be backed with the original source.
  • Cannot always find the needed information, the menu is too complex.

At this point we have set up our reporting to integrate with Adaptive. We have spent some non-recurring money to set up and populate the system. Switching at this point would only be an option if we were unhappy with the decision. This might seem like I am side-stepping the issue but I think an important point is being made. Whatever system you decide to go with, changing later is costly and unproductive. We chose Adaptive and have absolutely no regrets. We are currently at a crossroads here at Teachscape and are looking at several different potential options. If we were still relying on a 20 to 40 sheet Excel workbook with thousands of links and formulas, I don't think I would be able to sleep at night. Adaptive gives me a greater level of comfort.

Usability

Menus are easy to navigate, sheets are straightforward and flexible and you can work on your budget/forecasts without being at the office. The cloud based system makes it easy for users to complete their processes offsite and without needing there work provided computer. Creating new reports using both the web based Adaptive tool and OfficeConnect is quite simple with very minimal training.

Breadth of Deployment

It is used throughout the company in different divisions and at our corporate level. When used in a division recently the personnel from different departments directly inputted data and monitored their budget against actual. It is very user friendly and flexible.

Alternatives Considered

Adaptive blows away Hyperion from an ease of use, functionality and performance standpoint. The reason we selected Adaptive initially was the flexibility of the tool (sheets), going from manual forecasts to a web based tool and being able to build assumptions into our budget and forecasting processes. Also, the cost of Adaptive licenses provided significant savings when compared to the annual fees that we paid Oracle for use and support of their system.

While Bloomberg has a much more comprehensive view of the markets and typically has more up-to-date information in terms of overall news, Cap IQ is easier to integrate into existing financial models, and the formula builder included with the Excel plugin makes it easy to pull relevant financial data as well as update it based on a specific time frame.

Return on Investment

  • Adaptive offers plenty of flexibility with what-if scenario modeling. It's very easy to save different versions of the plan/forecast and to control access rights to the versions. It's possible to hide versions from all users or to set them as read only.
  • Adaptive makes month end variance analysis very straightforward. Comparing actuals with budget/forecast is quite simple and efficient. It's easy to do a high-level comparison and then to do a deep dive where needed. Also, the budget managers can perform their own reviews simultaneously.
  • We've been using the software for 5 years and our budget/forecast cycles change all of the time. Adaptive offers the flexibility needed to create rolling forecasts that extend out several years. However, I wish that it was easier to roll forward historical results into future periods - there's a mix of actual/budget data that gets rolled forward and there's a lot of editing required to arrive at a baseline budget.

  • We were a boutique investment bank, so it helped multiple people doing their job at the same time instead of waiting for a turn on the Bloomberg terminal.
  • Brought more interactive reports in PDF format to the table.
  • Saved some money, if I have to go basic.
