ADP Mobile Solutions

Since my company only uses the payroll features from ADP, I can only speak to those. I haven't had any issues with viewing pay statements and breakdowns, and I really like how there's a feature to hide the numbers when viewing your pay information, in case you don't want others near your screen seeing that information. This being said, I don't think it makes sense for a company to have different software for payroll, PTO, etc, which is what our company currently does. Since ADP allows you to have multiple features on this platform, I would recommend it for consolidating all "HR Type" features like this in one place.

Sauce Labs

For scenarios/teams that have the appropriate budget for a premium product, Sauce is definitely the route to go. Also, for teams that value folks that sponsor the OSS libraries they use and having that expertise on their team, Sauce is a great choice. I suppose if you're super strapped, don't put value in the above, or care about communication, they may not be a wise fit.

Pros

  • The mobile app is easy to use.
  • The ability to find my own information quickly is great.
  • I like the fact that I can review my own benefits and PTO balance.

  • Always up and running: I'd say 99.9% it's up and running, as I've rarely experienced any down time with their VM farm machines.
  • Reliable: we run our automated tests on their VMs at least every hour, around the clock, and their service is very reliable and working properly.
  • Community: good online community of other people using Sauce Labs with tips/tricks; often see Sauce Labs at conferences and it's nice to talk with them about what they have planned (new features).

Cons

  • The password requirements are onerous.
  • It takes awhile for the UI to load.
  • I'd like to see favorites added to the selection bar. There are normally only one or two items I need to find quickly but there are several click-throughs.

  • Identifying flakey tests, slow tests can prove to be really useful
  • Live testing on VMs is slow i.e. there is a lag for the browser to perform actions after actually performing them
  • The metrics provided are very basic. This could be improved

Sauce Labs has become an integral part of our entire continuous delivery pipeline. Our architectural vision for CI/CD simply would not be possible without Sauce Labs given the resource constraints our company has to develop and maintain a solution such as this internally.

It is an incredibly easy service to use for what its primary intention is. The only reason a point is deducted is because more feature enrichment can be done around the Sauce Connect Proxy utility and the Jenkins Sauce OnDemand plugin. User Account administration also needs more work, such as the addition of user groups, rather than a simple hierarchy of users.

Outages with the virtual machine services or the Sauce Connect Proxy service are more frequent than would be ideal, but updates to resolutions are communicated frequently, and resolutions usually come quick.

The execution of automated tests in Sauce Labs virtual machines is slightly slower than its main competition. Furthermore, the spin-up time of virtual machines (particularly device simulators or emulators) is significantly slower in our experience than its primary competition. The Sauce Connect Proxy further adds to performance decrease when used in our experience (around 10%-20% decrease when used), such that each call to the remote WebDriver instance in your test scripts can take upwards of 100-200 milliseconds.

The support is good for Sauce Labs. It is hard to get an initial response but the support has cleared our issues with Sauce Labs. Sometimes we have to follow up and it's hard to get a hold of the team initially. Once we get a hold of the team, the issues are always resolved.

If your automation framework is setup correctly and you create your webdriver separate from tests then it should be easy enough to implement Sauce Labs into your testing.

Alternatives Considered

Both software do the same types of things. I think either is a good choice, I would just recommend you consolidate all your processes onto one software. Having multiple software can be tedious and confusing for employees.

The services Sauce Labs provided are really outstanding, and they gave us really competitive prices with some additional features in the package.

The product is as scalable as your company's wallet can afford, since you are charged per unit of concurrency, where each new unit of concurrency represents another concurrent virtual machine you can spin up.

Return on Investment

  • It minimizes the HR administration.
  • ADP enables others to focus on improving the business rather than administering it.
  • ADP has helped streamline benefit choices and enrollment.

  • Increased scope coverage
  • Need to budget for tooling during external facing webpage execution.
