ADP is best if you have a really knowledgeable client rep that has been your contact for multiple sessions. Otherwise, you are forced to reiterate the problems to multiple parties. If you have a dedicated staff member who is knowledgeable of your processes, then ADP is a good resource for payroll needs.

Workday HCM

If you have many disparate systems for human resources modules, and critical payroll functions and modules, and you want to combine into one system, Workday HCM is excellent for this. The price point for a quite complete cloud computing system helps a lot, so you don't have to pay for expensive consultants to do constant implementations where the expertise is not passed on to the customer.

Pros

  • ADP has an easy to read portal that is easy to navigate. The UI is fairly intuitive and as a user I can find the right information quickly.
  • The ADP portal is flexible in the sense that we can change payroll amounts for special circumstances such as a special bonus or special payout. This allows our payroll team to make the necessary changes right away.
  • The reporting capabilities are quite robust and there are many ways to customize reports that we use for finance, payroll, HR, etc.

Cons

  • ADP organization has too many layers and you often have to speak to multiple people to find the right solution.
  • There doesn't appear to be efficient communication between the internal teams at ADP - the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Thus, you often have to re-explain your issues.
  • During the implementation of the software, it was not very coordinated. Some contacts were more knowledgeable than others and there was not uniform expertise.

  • Workday's Talent and Performance module is vast and possesses a lot of great functionality, however Workday currently offers no Certification for Implementers, which I feel is very much needed.
  • The recruiting module still has a long way to go. It is new, so we all know that is has gaps, but with WD24 coming out in March, I believe it will take Workday recruiting to the next level!
  • It would be great if Workday would share more information with partners, whether that be through a weekly status meeting, or email. Workday has done a good job at building their Community, however there are times where it has not been updated, and we share outdated information with customers.

I have a lot of experience and trust in this software package - actually any software package from ADP. The training that I have gotten over the years has always been complete and the representatives that I have had over the years are all EXCEPTIONAL! Looking back in the 20 plus years of experience, I can say truthfully there are only 1-3 persons who I would rather not have worked with at ADP. I find their customer service, and phone reps do their best to get the job done. This makes my job easier in the process.

After some initial challenges with change management, Georgetown has been successfully using Workday for over two years. We will go live this year with Financials replacing our current highly customized Peoplesoft Financials system. We have high confidence in a successful financials implementation and have been very pleased with Workday's responsiveness and adaptability to the needs of higher education.

Workday is okay - it looks nice on the outside, but they still have some bugs to deal with in the software so that it is more user-friendly and functioning for customers.

From my perspective, the system runs like a well oiled machine and I have not had any issues with customers complaining about speed. If a report is taking long to run, the report can run in the background and you can go about your business. For larger enterprises, there is additional space and machines to process the application in what Workday refers to it as Extended Configuration Tenant

Workday is still learning about the needs of higher education. I have seen rapid improvement in support and knowledge over the last year so am confident this will continue to improve. Overall however, I have found the Support Team to be extremely responsive and Workday offers the advantage of having support across several timezones so that we never wait more than a few hours for a response.

The instructors are knowledgeable, the ability to do hands-on exercise throughout are invaluable. The materials are useful reference after training is over. However, for basic functionality the system is pretty easy to pick up and there are plenty of free classes and tools so that only the system support and implementation team really need to take formal Workday training.

We had a very tight implementation scheduled. We had 6 months to do the implementation 3000 plus employees. In the us we implemented hcm with benefits and payroll. Outside the US basic hcm, no benefits or payroll.

Alternatives Considered

ADP is just a well known brand and is fairly affordable. Compared to other software such as Workday, it was a more affordable price point for our budget. However, if we had more resources and time to examine, Workday seems to offer a strong alternative to ADP in terms of payroll, HR, and financial systems. Overall though, there are more consultants knowledgeable about ADP which made it an easier choice for us

I wasn’t here when we made the selection. I was however, when we selected Workday at another company. At that time, we looked at Ultipro and Oracle Fusion HCM Cloud Service.

To me, Ultipro looked very windows based. It did not have a hip cool UI and we knew that employees would reject it. With respect to Oracle Fusion, I really liked the product when I saw it, but the sales pitch was very poor

Workday has released Financials and is continuing to develop it's Human Capital Management footprint with the addition of Workday Recruiting. I think customers will find that is easy to add on additional functionality in the system.Workday does make it easy for customers to make changes without relying on IT resources. The Business Process framework is a visual tool that allows functional resources to make changes and see the flow of the transaction

Return on Investment

  • Positive - ADP has simplified our payroll batches as the payroll side is quite intuitive.
  • Negatives - Because of a lack of internal coordination, we've often had to have multiple phone calls to resolve issues.
  • Positive - The reporting within the tool has allowed us to be more efficient during our financial audits.

  • Our previous system was homegrown and lacked in many areas. Going to Workday has given us a single source for all HR data that is easy to search and find what you are looking for.
  • Workday allowed us to streamline annual processes like performance reviews, raises, and benefits election. It has simplified these processes for the employees and provided more actionable data for HR.
  • Integration with other applications allows our user data to be used by other applications that need it. We simply output a file with username and ID to other apps that require that info.
