ADP Resource

ADP is best if you have a really knowledgeable client rep that has been your contact for multiple sessions. Otherwise, you are forced to reiterate the problems to multiple parties. If you have a dedicated staff member who is knowledgeable of your processes, then ADP is a good resource for payroll needs.

Workday is great for large companies that are tech savvy. If your company is bogged down with data warehouses and misplaced ownership of people data (within IT) then Workday is a product that will transform your organization and HR/Financial processes. This product is also a great motivator for a more engaged manager as they can handle hiring, life cycle events, performance/development, and exits within one system.

Pros

  • ADP has an easy to read portal that is easy to navigate. The UI is fairly intuitive and as a user I can find the right information quickly.
  • The ADP portal is flexible in the sense that we can change payroll amounts for special circumstances such as a special bonus or special payout. This allows our payroll team to make the necessary changes right away.
  • The reporting capabilities are quite robust and there are many ways to customize reports that we use for finance, payroll, HR, etc.

  • The user experience is very intuitive and is in line with what people want to see and do with an online application these days. We don't have to spend much time on training employees and managers because they can generally figure out how to do what they need to do on their own. The ease of use and look & feel are some of the reasons we chose Workday to begin with, and it's getting better with age.
  • Security. It's flexible so you can allow access to what you want and block what you don't. And it's solid. And you don't have to remember who has access to what when building and delivering reports and chance exposing confidential or sensitive information. If they don't have permission to see it, they don't see it.
  • Reporting capabilities are amazing. We're several years in and still feel like we're just scratching the surface. Our executives love the dashboard views and have set them as the standard for other internal dashboard-like reporting.

Cons

  • ADP organization has too many layers and you often have to speak to multiple people to find the right solution.
  • There doesn't appear to be efficient communication between the internal teams at ADP - the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Thus, you often have to re-explain your issues.
  • During the implementation of the software, it was not very coordinated. Some contacts were more knowledgeable than others and there was not uniform expertise.

  • Workday users will need training - not all areas of the system are intuitive (report writing, for example).
  • Version updates can be too frequent; although they reduced updates from four times per year to two, it can be challenging to our staff to reacquaint themselves with a newer version, particularly if it includes a redesign.
  • Unless really customized, there are sometimes too many clicks to get through a process.

I have a lot of experience and trust in this software package - actually any software package from ADP. The training that I have gotten over the years has always been complete and the representatives that I have had over the years are all EXCEPTIONAL! Looking back in the 20 plus years of experience, I can say truthfully there are only 1-3 persons who I would rather not have worked with at ADP. I find their customer service, and phone reps do their best to get the job done. This makes my job easier in the process.

It is work to make one system the source of truth for our data, but now that it is done, there is less work involved in staying on this path. This means for us that maintaining and/or implementing new modules like performance, finance, talent, etc. is simple. It's a no-brainer

Overall this is a highly useable product. It does require continual use to stay current on changes in the User Interface and functionality, but as noted earlier, this is a reasonable trade-off for the rapid rate of improvement. It is very user friendly and the templated business processes prevents the system from becoming overly complicated

From my perspective, the system runs like a well oiled machine and I have not had any issues with customers complaining about speed. If a report is taking long to run, the report can run in the background and you can go about your business. For larger enterprises, there is additional space and machines to process the application in what Workday refers to it as Extended Configuration Tenant

• We don’t use Workday customer service. We are obliged to go through our consultant, One Day. The level of service provided by One Day is poor.
• Turnaround time is terrible. People on tier one support don’t have enough knowledge. They spend a lot of time asking questions that they should know the answers to. Fix are often made locally to one specific area of the application. We often realize that the same problem crops up across the application and we have to make the same change everywhere – have to keep going back

Some training is offered online. Cost is per-person. This also gets quite expensive. Training doesn’t follow a logical path A to B. Starts in middle. When you try to do it afterwards at your desk, difficult.

There are 11 different courses. They have on-demand training one hour sessions and host half day training sessions – e.g. report writing split across 2 half days, where you go into a classroom online instructor led. The online stuff is all provided by Workday.

Alternatives Considered

Before my time, Uyemura was using ADP Paynet Plus and switched to another software, who shall go unnamed, but it was a complete bust. The taxes were calculated incorrectly on employees who have a car allowance and of course this a very big area for mistakes. We quickly switched back to ADP Paynet plus.

We initially researched 30 and did 10 product demos. Our short list was HR Source, Ultipro, and Workday. Our need for multi-national really limited the short list. We picked Workday as their interface is head and shoulders above the other two. Ultipro was next closest. We also liked the integration with payroll and benefit carriers and some of the report writing and security models though it was advanced for a company our size, we liked having that in our back-pocket. Although we picked Workday, I feel other two would have met our needs

Workday has released Financials and is continuing to develop it's Human Capital Management footprint with the addition of Workday Recruiting. I think customers will find that is easy to add on additional functionality in the system.Workday does make it easy for customers to make changes without relying on IT resources. The Business Process framework is a visual tool that allows functional resources to make changes and see the flow of the transaction

Return on Investment

  • We currently use ADP Resource for payroll and some HR only. We have been approached for the 401k and insurance portion of ADP Resource but we have separate third party administrators for those.
  • The customer service is outstanding. I would not change anything.
  • I understand and agree that the employee's would benefit from viewing and making limited changes to their employee record and this will be approached in the next meeting we have with the president of the company.

  • Again from the default perspective of an end user it is difficult for me to comment on things like ROI or impacts. However I can say that the software is significantly better than anything we were using before hand. It also consolidated a significant number of software packages. I would assume a positive impact and ROI.
