Alteryx Analytics

I wish I had found and used Alteryx Analytics years ago. Having multiple data sources with a variety of naming conventions for our businesses we spent WEEKS cleaning/reorganizing/renaming fields in our data to be able to consolidate. We did this on one set of reports for one use. Each time we wanted an update this process would need to be repeated. This took tons of useless admin time. Had we had Alteryx we could have created 1 identifier, noted all the different naming conventions or issues, selected the ones we wanted and created the workflow to use it over and over and over again on any data we wanted. Build once - use multiple times. It would have been (and now is) a HUGE time saver. Plus any new anomalies are identified by the program as errors so you can "autocorrect" them in the same workflow. Alteryx is a miracle in my opinion.

IBM SPSS

Overall, I can see how IBM SPSS can be used by teams with simple objectives when it comes to analytics. It is similarly very appropriate for teaching students about basic notions of applied statistics. However, compared with other statistical software and programming languages, it does not come with great advantages in terms of computational capabilities and customization.

Pros

  • Alteryx provides an integrated workflow management environment for data blending, analytics, and reporting. It is also very extensible to be connected to a variety of data connections including major databases (Oracle, etc.), analytics tools (R), and visualization tools such as Tableau through its plugins. Our department used Oracle and Tableau already and it was well integrated with Alteryx.
  • The workflow authoring environment in Desktop is easy to use so that most of the users (if they are a bit skilled data developers or analysts) may not need the training to use its basic functions. Drag and drop interface and icons are intuitive to understand.
  • When running Alteryx workflows, it is easy to monitor and track what's the progress by seeing percentages. It is helpful to balance and manage bandwidths of database servers, especially when to populate large data sets.

  • SPSS creates helpful output that can be adapted for producing report and presentation content.
  • SPSS allows the novice to use drop-down menus and the expert to use syntax. It also helps novices become experts by allowing you to paste and adapt syntax to meet needs.
  • SPSS has a wide variety of analytical techniques that are available in the statistical package. It is user-friendly.

Cons

  • Sometimes the desktop version of authoring tool crashes! It's been unstable in the previous versions but gets better. Even if it doesn't crash, it used to be slow or not responding.
  • When running several version of database drivers in local machine or server, it is tricky to set up database connections. Often you have to figure out it by googling the problem and solution. There are not many knowledge bases from Alteryx.
  • Alteryx project file creates .bak file automatically. It is useful to prevent for the purpose of back up, sometimes it's not necessary. But it is not changeable for some reason. By default, it always creates backups.

  • A visual presentation of output in SPSS is lacking. I would never use graphs and charts as they appear in SPSS output unless I had no other alternative.
  • If I am working from a file that is located on a networked drive and I leave the network, SPSS frequently crashes.
  • SPSS is a large application that consumes significant resources. Especially if certain errors are present in complex and lengthy syntax, SPSS can take several minutes to process, even on a top-tier computer system.

I personally have moved to a different position that does not require data analysis tools. I really enjoyed working with Alteryx and think it is a great tool, but have moved to a different organization and role.

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

For people with research and coding backgrounds, it's easy enough to figure out on your own with some trial and error. For others, there are good tools in the help menu to walk new users through the processes step-by-step. Not all of the analyses are intuitive or easy to interpret, so you may have to use other online resources to help you use your results more effectively. Overall, it's not nearly as intimidating as other stats packages. I've seen a lot of people pick up basic SPSS skills relatively quickly with a little coaching from a mentor.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

I have not contacted IBM SPSS for support myself. However, our IT staff has for trying to get SPSS Text Analytics Module to work. The issue was never resolved, but I'm not sure if it was on the IT's end or on SPSS's end

Implementation

Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Have a plan for managing the yearly upgrade cycle. Most users work in the desktop version, so there needs to be a mechanism for either pushing out new versions of the software or a key manager to deal with updated licensing keys. If you have a lot of users this needs to be planned for in advance.

Alternatives Considered

Haven't used any other products that come close to comparing to Alteryx...

IBM SPSS is generally pretty comparable with Stata, except that Stata offers more niche analytical tools because of the active user community that adds new custom functions all the time. IBM SPSS syntax is much, much, easier to learn than R or SAS.

Return on Investment

  • Alteryx does an excellent job of integrating consumer and spatial data to calculate and visualize things like locations within a certain drive-time radius.
  • For visualization purposes I had to move the data to excel for some decent graphs.
  • It can become very expensive.

  • Data analysis in IBM SPSS is faster than in Excel, especially when you need to create or transform a lot of variables. Recoding is much more efficient in IBM SPSS. This helps our clients get the end product much faster, and we can be confident in the results we present.
