Alteryx Analytics

Well suited: if an organization already has a lot of running ETLs or pipelines but need to systemize them, Alteryx is a good choice. It would be good to figure out how well Alteryx would be harmonized with the existing components, but in a general sense, it may be well harmonized. Less appropriate: Alteryx is good for "automation", but some data developers and analysts may prefer to remain and keep using SQL tools. One should be careful of not just adding "one more layer or tool" into the existing pipeline and make it more complicated to manage.

IBM SPSS

SPSS is useful in analyzing quantitative data to evaluate relationships among variables or groups of variables, to evaluate group differences in individual variables or groups of variables, to evaluate the psychometric properties of a measure or item, to manipulate and process data for use in reports and articles, to document analytical processes, and creating easily digestible analysis output. I use it in studies with thousands of participants responding to hundreds of questions. It enhances my ability to manage and use data.

We've developed a working partnership with Alteryx. As an enablement suite, we're continuing to innovate and deliver great products with use of Alteryx in our solutions. Alteryx use expands to our global product development teams and is in use in multiple parts of our organization. Alteryx also delivers Experian demographic content to other clients in their product offering. We're highly likely to renew, but that decision is way above my pay grade.

It's super easy to use for newbies and super powerful for power users! It does EVERYTHING you are usually asked to do analytically. Their Help Desk is PHENOMENAL. And I find the upgrade and renewal price to be a good deal.

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

SPSS is beginner friendly and user-friendly for beginner analysts and simple statistical tests. It's "click and go" interface does take some learning, but overall this is much easier than other programs I have used and seen. Compared to SAS software, SPSS takes a great deal less familiarizing and it not a matter of learning a coding language like SAS and RStudio.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Some of the knowledge base answers are either circular or just not very useful. Others refer to OLD versions making it difficult to see whether the problem I have is still relevant to the current version

Implementation

Alteryx Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Have a plan for managing the yearly upgrade cycle. Most users work in the desktop version, so there needs to be a mechanism for either pushing out new versions of the software or a key manager to deal with updated licensing keys. If you have a lot of users this needs to be planned for in advance.

Breadth of Deployment

Our company kept it contained in the marketing department. Other departments may not understand it.

Alternatives Considered

Alteryx's UI is fantastic insomuch that training can really be self-driven, albeit with several Google searches a day and visits to the Alteryx community. The other solutions we looked at were much less intuitive and not nearly as flexible, automated, and didn't give you the capability to watch the data be changed through every step of the process like Alteryx can do through browses and data samples.

I have used SAS, R, Systat, Stata, Excel, Access and I continually find myself using SPSS to do the same set of tasks I would be using the previously named software to do. It's an all encompassing software that is very easy to use but can become as powerful an analytical tool as you would need. Also, when it comes to statistical modeling packages, it's a lot like religion, what you grew up with, in my case SPSS while an undergraduate in pschology, it what you will practice throughout your life. So IBM, if you are listening, you need to get your converts in High School and Undergraduate programs... give it away so that when they are in the workforce they will buy it through their company. Also, keep improving SPSS, which in the last several generations have been AWESOME! Temporal Causal Modeling was a god send. The spatial component upgrades were great too, as I do a lot in GIS as well. If IBM keeps doing things like this and PROMOTING it, the product should see an increase in use, adoption and sales.

Data Integration

Alteryx Analytics8.9
Based on 16 answers
Unless there's totally different kinds of datasets, it works with any flat file sheets and is very easy to play with data. If you have files in shared folders the run time depends on the size and speed of accessibility as well, but for most part it works really smooth.

Return on Investment

  • Definitely, an increase in employee efficiency. With the right tools and hardware, Alteryx can reduce the processing time significantly.
  • Automation and/or automatic report scheduling frees up a lot of time that can be used elsewhere.
  • Licensing updates are somewhat not handled easily and quite often create issues with modules to run slowly and/or not being active.
