Amplitude Analytics

The best use if there is a need to see events some particular user made. It can be useful to analyze what went wrong with users who stop using a product, or to find some pattern for users who purchased it.Another great use is if you need to set up more tricky funnels, which requires more advanced tools than most other similar apps have

I found that implementation of the system overall was very easy and that providing custom URLs that hooked into a specific dashboard without requiring a login mechanism worked very well. This makes it easy to fold in a Piwik installation as a replacement within a hosting management system, such as CPanel.

Cons

Amplitude Analytics

  • It would be nice to have standard dashboards without a need to set it up from scratch.
  • It would be nice to have some additional tools to analyze the profitability of traffic channels in a particular funnel without creating additional charts for that purpose.
  • The left panel can be used more productively for small business.

As stated before, Piwik is a great in-house or community alternative to Google Analytics. It allows you to tailor your usage data to your needs. Since it is a free application, the license will be renewed.

For the intermediate user, the overall Piwik usability is pretty straight forward. If you are a beginner or novice, install and customization could prove to be a bit tedious. Especially when it comes to connecting geo-location data for tracking specifics. Overall though, straight from the dashboard you will get an immense amount of information. From there, the menu at the top breaks things down in more specifics.

Only one hiccup when we were using a beta installation. Other than that, smooth sailing.

Alternatives Considered

Amplitude Analytics

A lot of data can be tracked via manual tracking or linking to an excel sheet, but with such a huge amount of data, it is far easier to have all of it laid out in an easy to read format. The charts and graphs are easy to use and are really pretty user-friendly. The hardest part is in simply finding the event that you want to use.

We are a pretty small company and even smaller Marketing shop. We use tools from both Google and Bing but have not had the financial freedom to explore additional tools out there. I have looked at Moz and would really like to evaluate that one at some point. For real hard-core Analytics, look into the Adobe products such as Business Catalyst. I had the opportunity to experience that for a little while at a previous employer.
