Amplitude Analytics

Well suited to analyze data either to make better-informed marketing decisions in the future. It's also useful to get analytics reports and track statistics on a daily/weekly basis.

I found that implementation of the system overall was very easy and that providing custom URLs that hooked into a specific dashboard without requiring a login mechanism worked very well. This makes it easy to fold in a Piwik installation as a replacement within a hosting management system, such as CPanel.

Pros

  • Very user-friendly and easy to understand even for those with not much knowledge
  • The interface is nice looking
  • Different charts are used to analyze different types of data

  • Community edition available for no charge
  • LDAP module available

Cons

  • No capabilities to group numbers.
  • Impossible to aggregate the data altogether so sometimes it's hard to have a real overview of everything.
  • Even though I find the interface rather user-friendly and accessible to people new to data analysis, maybe it could be useful to have a step by step guide when starting using the tool.

  • I think Piwik could use a face-lift in the dashboard GUI department. I have used both NewRelic (best presentation in my opinion) and Adobe Omniture, and both seems to have a better flowing, modern-design dashboard GUI that is somewhat easier to navigate
  • Had to make sure analytics server that is running Piwik is always "up", as we hosted our own instances

Given, that I do not make a decision wherever to buy the product, I think the biggest culprit would be name recognition (that Piwik currently lacks compared to Google Analytics and such). Also, not to put it into negative light, but being "free" raises eyebrows, as being a lesser software

For the intermediate user, the overall Piwik usability is pretty straight forward. If you are a beginner or novice, install and customization could prove to be a bit tedious. Especially when it comes to connecting geo-location data for tracking specifics. Overall though, straight from the dashboard you will get an immense amount of information. From there, the menu at the top breaks things down in more specifics.

Only one hiccup when we were using a beta installation. Other than that, smooth sailing.

Alternatives Considered

Amplitude Analytics is an easier tool to use. It requires less knowledge of SQL and as long as you have notions of data analysis and retrieving data in general. It is much more user-friendly and allows for easy and quick reporting. It can be used by different teams and therefore can be an easily shareable tool.

I have used a number of analytics products, including Google Analytics, Clicky and GoSquared. The winning feature of Piwik is the compact, rich data tables, which make it a good addition to the analytics mix. While I'm not throwing out the others, I've continued to find Piwik useful.

  • Positive: Easy collaboration and funnel development

  • While Piwik had no direct impact on ROI, it has made it easier for me to identify the web pages that were missing the mark. Fixing those is sure to have a positive impact on attention.
