AppDynamics

Using AppDynamics to gain insights into our application through the view of the endpoint which can be a web server, SQL Database or our storage systems, has provided our support teams the ability to narrow in on problems very quickly by looking at our application from a holistic view. We have been able to isolate a specific error and determine where in the application stack that occurs to determine if there is a coding problem or an issue with how the server communicates with other subsystems.

Dynatrace

Dynatrace is well suited to address challenges that are well base-lined. This requires workloads that are relatively repeatable and normalized. If workloads are random or unique, the AI will struggle to understand when challenges arise. That said, most of our workloads have been well baselines, and appropriate for Dyantrace.

Pros

AppDynamics

  • What sold me was the agent-less monitoring of the databases so we could actually see in real time what days/times we needed to apply additional CPU resources.
  • Provides complete visibility on the application's performance (Application Monitoring), database performance, and infrastructure performance ranging from 1 day - 1 year.
  • The level of insights it provided helped us address the production issues quickly and we started using it for all new development and deployment. It helped us move from being reactive to proactive in identifying and managing issues/ bottlenecks

Dynatrace

  • We loved Dynatrace's ability to show the data flow - from the front end points through the back end points straight to the database and various API's. It was advanced in its data visualization. This is useful for debugging - showing when/where the errors are. It can even enable non-technical individuals in the corporation to help debug
  • Dynatrace has some great highly customizable integration options as well as monitoring. You can configure your layout & integration options to create custom monitoring alerts for your applications performance. Further you can increase the extensibility of using a REST API on your architecture.
  • Some advanced dev-ops systems are utilizing Kubernetes/docker aswell as Node.JS - Dynatrace was able to log and help understand all of our dev-ops needs. It gave us native alerts based off of deviations from the baseline that we set during initial configuration. These metrics are priceless.

Cons

AppDynamics

  • SaaS is developed prior, then on-premise. We have reasons to need all of it on premise. They stay in step pretty well, and will fulfill promises to deliver. Sometimes, a new functionality is available only in SaaS until it's available for on-premise (2-8 months later depending)
  • It's not a real-time monitoring solution. There's a 90 second delay. That wasn't a problem for me, but I had a few that had issue with that.

Dynatrace

  • Dynatrace does not monitor easily on AIX OS.
  • Dynatrace does not monitor easily on a C-based application.
  • The way DPGR is addressed by Dynatrace is not very complete, and not clear. One thing is to mask the IP and request attributes but is not enough, the replay session feature is great but raises serious questions about user tracking.

Alternatives Considered

AppDynamics

AppDynamics was trialled in a shoot-out between New Relic and Dynatrace and just about edged New Relic simply for the ability to drill down to the methods and lines of code in the error monitoring, which is an invaluable feature for a development manager. New Relic Insights provides slightly easier dashboarding and New Relic generally is easier to use, but AppDynamics just came out on top.

Dynatrace

We no longer use any other products. We used to use the three products listed. However, Dynatrace has replaced all of them. When we moved to Dynatrace, we were using New Relic. I was unsatisfied with the product at that time. Its dashboarding capabilities were insufficient and the product was too cumbersome to manage and maintain.

Return on Investment

AppDynamics

  • No noticeable ROI as such but that's mainly down to our application type. E-Commerce organisations and similar would benefit hugely.
  • Did provide us early visibility of failing calls which got stuck in a loop and spammed some of our servers.
  • Positive impact in terms of highlighting slow running queries.

Dynatrace

  • It has had a positive impact. Working with packaged systems, you don’t get a view into the code. With Dynatrace I was able to work with my infrastructure teams and external software vendors to figure out issues with the software or environments and get them resolved quickly.
