If you are trying to understand your IT costs and have cost pools and services defined then you are in a good position to move forward. If you are missing one of those items, spend the time getting that figured out before trying to implement the system. You can do that in parallel and use the ATUM model but it will not be an quick implementation. Ask what services Apptio can help with during the implementation process. They have some very good resources that can help provide best practice details from other customers.

Pentaho

It is well suited for developers who may not be adept at strict coding, but have experience with GUI development. It is also better for rather simpler ETL, as the GUI interface has natural restrictions that make complex ETL problems challenging to solve. It may also be well suited for companies on a budget, as the free version still has enough features to be reasonably useful.

Pros

  • Apptio Technology Business Management is easy to use from a reporting standpoint. Reports can be created quickly and end users can filter as needed to retrieve the desired data.
  • Apptio Technology Business Management has been able to eliminate manual processes that involved numerous Excel spreadsheets. This enables the users to spend more time on analytics and less time on data manipulation.
  • The transparency that Apptio Technology Business Management provides at the click of a button helps reduce the number of questions that the IT area receives. When questions are raised they are more focused and easier to understand.

  • The Data Integration tool is fantastic. A novice user can get up to speed quickly with it and the GUI is intuitive
  • Support. As an enterprise customer, I am always thrilled with the fast turnaround on support tickets that I open.
  • Job Scheduling. The Job scheduler is easy to use and very reliable
  • Data Analyzer Tool in "User Console". The drag and drop UI makes it easy for me end users to see the data in whatever way suits them. They can even GEO-MAP the data instantly!!

Cons

  • Apptio Technology Business Management struggles with some of the report formatting. We are using it in place of Excel and simple things like freezing the header and the left column are not available in Apptio Technology Business Management.
  • Reports can become very large and the scroll bars on the page will impact users. When creating a report, the monitor size is very important. If you are working on a big screen the reports will be difficult to use on a smaller laptop screen.
  • The refresh or warming time can become an issue based on the number of reports and the amount of data that you have in the system. Being able to identify reports that are driving this up are not easily identified.

  • Heavy software to install
  • Requires licensing to enable all features
  • Difficult to integrate with other servers

Apptio is proving to be a relatively user-friendly product, assuming proper skill sets and training. Enterprise Analytical abilities to support the proper data readiness and implementation are key.

I would have liked some hands on help in trying to match what Customers were already used to. Plus having a team of Java/BI folks was difficult to assemble since what required to be done in an object oriented fashion could have easily been done via a SQL construct. This hash of technologies was difficult to manage.

Course Taken: DI1000 Pentaho Data Integration FundamentalsSetup A week before your class started, the instructor will start sending out class material and lab setup instructions. This is helpful so that you understand how the environment is laid out and can start reviewing the content. Ultimately it saved about a 1/2 day trying to setup with 10 other people online which was great! The CourseThe 3-day course was laid out like many other technical classes with 15-30 minutes instruction and 15-60 minutes of lab exercises. The instructor was very knowledgeable with the functionality from version to version and answered questions as we went along. I was amazed at some of the functionality that was available that I was not using at the time and quickly implemented changes to many existing transformations and jobs. The novice users seemed to catch on quickly and more experienced users explained how some of the functionality was used in their home environments. Towards the end there was enough time so that we were able to ask very directed questions about our own environments. Overall, I really found the class to be informative and deliver enough information to be dangerous. My skills improved and I was able to design better and efficient transformations for the HIE. Implementation

Well, so far. Apptio Consulting covered specific model architecting areas particularly. Most of the heavy lifting is being done in-house with support from Apptio as it relates to tool impacts and needs. Some administrative tasks were redundant

Get the right people in before starting implementation. Start small and build as you go approach is time consuming and involves lot of rework.Evangalize within the organization the capabilities and limitations equally so that correct delivery expectations are set.Set expectations with the Customer that the tool cannot replace proprietary software in terms of stability/usability and that timelines could change given the new ness of the product.

Breadth of Deployment

Typically system analysts, business analysts and departmental managers were our target audience. 10-15 users was the most we could reach before we decided to go with another suite of Products. But who ever used it did appreciate the end to end flow of data that they could see as opposed to the data obfuscation they noticed before.

Alternatives Considered

There is no true competitor that is even comparable to allowing the same capabilities and benefits Apptio provides. It is ground breaking in every sense of the word and will make a huge difference for each and every customer. It can be very complex at times, but like everything in life anything worth implementing takes time, effort, and some growing pains.

We used the Pentaho community edition because we were looking for an open source solution. There is a good community involved with Pentaho. I often found Pentaho to be more flexible than Crystal Reports or SSIS but sometimes less polished in the user interface.

Pentaho has a community online that shares the jobs and transformations. Importing/exporting the jobs is a piece of cake. Within our internal cloud, I am able to share, open, review the jobs and transformations that he has created and we can work together to finalize them. However, the access control comes with the connections themselves; if you don't have access, you don't have access and cannot do much with the tools to help shape and transform the data.
