Delphix

Delphix is well suited for development and/or testing teams who want to eliminate the wait time for receiving data from production (i.e. non-prod refreshes). Delphix can reduce the time prod refreshes take from days to minutes. Delphix virtualization is also strong for providing the ability to set a bookmark, make data changes/compare results, and rewind to the bookmark enabling automated regression testing. The Delphix Data Masking product works as advertised and is a customizable. From an licensing perspective Delphix has a 3TB minimum so its better suited to enterprise sized databases, the ROI may go down if the db size is small, number of dev/test dbs is small, and/or number of developers and testers is small. If you don't refresh from Prod frequently your storage usage will climb which offsets some of the hard dollar cost benefit.

I can't think of scenarios it would be less appropriate or suited for, but it is well suited for an organization looking to keep their files in a safe environment with version tracking and audit trails. That is pretty much any organization in this day and age. Computers are great but hardware breaks down intermittently so knowing you have your files in a secure location that won't ever fail is fantastic

Druva inSync

  • Restoring users and deleted files from both Cloud and desktop applications, with only a few button click.
  • The InSync dashboard allows me to see where all my assets are and when their last backups occurred.
  • The installation process was VERY easy. So getting everyone up and running was painless.

  • As part of the initial setup, we had a few issues surrounding large numbers of accounts being backed up at the same time. This was more a Microsoft issue than anything, and with help from support, we resolved the issue.
  • The email reports can be a little useless on occasion. For example, I don't need an email every day with a failed backup report if there are no failures.
  • Again with email, the weekly backup report has so much information in it that the email sometimes fails to load. A simple email with a link to click would be better.

Aside from Druva taking away the Share feature just to push folks to the cloud, it's perfect for what it does and should have just continued to grow not have clueless management decide they wanted to migrate the on-premise customers to the cloud version and offer the share tool for them, this was just wrong and remains wrong.

The Delphix support organization is one of the best vendor technology support groups I have ever worked with. We use the premier support model currently and get fast, knowledgeable help and the Customer Success Director helps us find answers to questions on best practices and topics that traditionally fall outside of support.

Most issues I have can be solved without opening a ticket. But if I need to get in touch with a support agent, I can open a chat request and within minutes have a tech on the end assisting me. The few tickets I had to open were resolved on the first call.

In consultation with a Druva support person we configured a few policies first for several groups of users. Once that was done it was easy to add users and generate emails that contained links and instructions to download/install the app. Once installed, the app applied the appropriate policy and the sync of data began. We had 40 or so devices to protect, and in a week or less they were all protected. The delays usually were on the part of the user who needed to schedule some time (15-30 minutes at most) to accept the invitation and download/install the app.

Delphix

There are many first generation test data management tools that use SQL scripts behind the scenes to create small subsets of data for testing of functional subjects within the database (i.e. Claims or Membership, etc.). Delphix differs by operating at the data block level on disk, sitting between the db engine (Oracle, SQL, etc.) and the physical storage. This allows Delphix to provide full size virtual databases for the cost of not much more than enough storage for a single prod sized copy. Intelligent block sharing also enables full db refreshes and rewinds in minutes, not hours or days, all without having to maintain any schema relationship information which is required in first-gen TDM tools.Delphix does not perform any SQL functions so its not for extract, transform, load or creating smaller subset databases. We figured why subset the data if we can get a full virtual copy for no additional cost!

My biggest requirement for looking at Data Protection as a Service is security, both in transit and at rest. Druva inSync offers one of the best security models where if a key is chance it does not affect the current session. Furthermore, we did not see the same dedupe savings with other services.

Return on Investment

Delphix

  • Positive ROI on the first year.
  • Low TCO as really easy to use and manage.
  • Avoid technology vendor lock in.
  • Avoid technology difficulties to manage data, one ingested Delphix is on charge.

  • Anytime a user does his/her own restore it has saved his or her own time in not having to redo the lost changes made and it doesn't involve IT staff to do a restore for them or to try looking for or recovering the lost/deleted/corrupted file. This savings in money and time spent is apparent, numerous and possibly priceless.
  • Druva is an affordable product; it's per user cost is acceptable and is affordable for even small businesses
