GitLab

I have never had a CI/CD that was as easy to use and configure as GitLab. As a user of the pipelines at our company, it is very clear what each pipeline is intending to do and understand what commands these pipelines run (by looking at the code repository's GitLab.YAML file). Reviewing code and providing valuable feedback is also easy on GitLab, which is something I do on a day-to-day basis. From here, these files are easy to adjust when needed and they even provide a syntax tool to make sure the file is properly written before you commit the file. On top of this, at the company level, it seems GitLabhas all the tools and features we need to work on different types of projects or team structures.

Mirantis Cloud Native Suite (Docker Enterprise)

[Mirantis Cloud Native Suite (Docker Enterprise)] is the most advanced tool till now, which works as a VMs
and separates any single application from the dependencies. Also, this tool is
helping me in the agile development of the processes. It is strongly recommended to
almost all major organizations.

Pros

GitLab

  • It uses the well-known Git language to communicate with, which is very popular
  • The interface is slick and easy to get used to
  • They are very transparant in their security issues
  • Updating the software from the command line is the easiest I have come across

  • Containers - Docker is the go-to when using Containers, which are super useful if you need an environment that works both for Windows and Linux
  • Efficiency - Docker is very lightweight and doesn't demand too much from your CPU or server
  • CI/CD - Docker is excellent for plumbing into your build pipeline. It integrates nicely, is reliable, and has an easy set up.

Cons

GitLab

  • The permissions system i adequate, but could use some additional flexibility. As it is, there are only predefined roles a user can be put into.
  • The issue tracking system is somewhat immature. It's effective for tracking bugs and enhancements, but is not very usable as a project management system.

Mirantis Cloud Native Suite (Docker Enterprise)

  • Containers are often opaque - if a container doesn't work out of the box, it's messy to fix.
  • Logging is complexified by the multiple containers and logs are often not piped to places you expect them to be.
  • Networking is complexified due to internal port mapping between containers, etc.

Gitlab is the best in its segment. They have a free version, they have open-source software, they provide a good service with their SaaS product, they are a fully-remote company since the beginning (which means they are fully distributed and have forward-thinking IMO). I would certainly recommend them to everyone.

Usability

The web console management is superior and I would have given Gitlab a 10, but sometimes it is hard to find documentation about a configuration setting in the gitlab.rb configuration file. As we move everything to code that means moving our CVS tools to code as well - and Gitlab to code. The usability of Gitlab from the end user's perspective is superior and the usability from the operations team is very good and getting better but there could be a little improvement in the gitlab.rb config file layout and documentation.

Docker's CLI has a lot of options, and they aren't all intuitive. And there are so many tools in the space (Docker Compose, Docker Swarm, etc) that have their own configuration as well. So while there is a lot to learn, most concepts transfer easily and can be learned once and applied across everything.

At this point, I do not have much experience with Gitlab support as I have never had to engage them. They have documentation that is helpful, not quite as extensive as other documentation, but helpful nonetheless. They also seem to be relatively responsive on social media platforms (twitter) and really thrived when GitHub was acquired by Microsoft

The community support for Docker is fantastic. There is almost always an answer for any issue I might encounter day-to-day, either on Stack Overflow, a helpful blog post, or the community Slack workspace. I've never come across a problem that I was unable to solve via some searching around in the community.

Alternatives Considered

GitLab

There are similar features among others. However, GitLab [has] better security and faster flow of information. It also allows us to do the monitoring of our work. There is also better collaboration with others across our regional teams. IT has [a] better, cleaner, and bug free environment that anyone can use.

We've used XAMPP, PHPmyAdmin and similar local environments (our app is on PHP). Because of how easy you can change the configuration of libraries on PHP and versions (which is SO painful on XAMPP or other friendly LAMP local servers) we are using Docker right now. Also, being sure that the environment is exactly the same makes things easier for developing.

Return on Investment

GitLab

  • Openness is a mandate at the Digital Impact Alliance, Gitlab helps achieve this in all aspects of the work
  • The built-in build pipelines, along with in-browser editing of source code make managing the static site extremely easy
  • Gitlab nears feature parity with github, making software development workflows fairly easy

Mirantis Cloud Native Suite (Docker Enterprise)

  • Docker has made it possible for us to deploy code faster, increasing the productivity of our development teams.
  • Docker has made it possible for us to decentralize our build and release system. This means that teams can deploy on their own schedule and our dev ops team can concentrate on building better tools rather than deploying for the teams
  • Docker has allowed us to virtualize our entire development process and made it much simpler to build out new data centers. This, in turn, is significantly increasing our ROI by providing a path forward for internationalization.
