Considered Both Products
GoDaddy
Chose GoDaddy
GoDaddy is by far the top company. HostGator comes second but we choose GoDaddy over HostGator because of the customer service. The other ones are terrible. Bad hosting, websites go down frequently and are not great at customer service. GoDaddy does a fantastic job and really …
Chose GoDaddy
Whenever new clients come to me for website development, I begin our relationship by asking about domain registration and website hosting. I cringe when they say they use GoDaddy and often warn them that additional time and effort may be required to accomplish their goals. …
Chose GoDaddy
Their backend is terrible as compared to Godaddy , also HostGator is slow as compared to Godaddy .I would like to also tell HostGator services are not good as compared to Godaddy , which included hosting , domain name , website builder , also many many more.
Chose GoDaddy
Best customer service and fees when first becoming a client. Very helpful, supportive, and full of kindness when making website hosting changes. Follow up and good product offering. When I called to begin using the service they were helpful and switched it over for me at no fee …
Chose GoDaddy
GoDaddy has gotten too big for themselves. They have gone very corporate, you can't really get support as easily as you used to, and their pricing is ridiculous. Not to mention they sneak things into your cart during the checkout process and reel you in with introductory …
Chose GoDaddy
With GoDaddy: I can always expect that their support will be helpful and positive.
  • That I can reach operators by phone or chat
  • That I can find my domains and host in one place.
  • That I can also purchase and access email for myself and my team.
Chose GoDaddy
If you are looking for a bargain, and are okay with shared hosting, then GoDaddy is perfect, there are 'cheaper' hosting companies out there, however, GoDaddy is by far the most for your money in terms of inexperienced users being able to navigate their way around hosting and …
Chose GoDaddy
My clients typically select GoDaddy because it's the most well-known brand/company to them. They've seen it advertised everywhere so that's what they tend to go for. I don't typically choose them for my own purchases or recommend them to clients. I would describe GoDaddy as …
HostGator
Chose HostGator
I believe that HostGator is the most affordable and no-nonsense hosting provide of all that I've tried. I think they most closely compare with GoDaddy. However, HostGator is easier to work with and often has better pricing over the long run because they offer more promotional …
Chose HostGator
GoDaddy comes with a reputation for quick install options, but HostGator had more to offer at a cheaper rate.
Chose HostGator
GoDaddy has ALOT of cons but is usually picked for being cheap. Host Gator is way more worth it.
Chose HostGator
HostGator is competitive in pricing. Siteground and GoDaddy were close competitors. I also ended up using WebSynthesis with a unique IP and a managed WordPress service which solves any hacking issues.
Chose HostGator
When we were looking at hosting companies, it boiled down to both HostGator & GoDaddy. We chose HostGator because the sales team spoke to us more directly, whereas GoDaddy felt like they were reading a script.

I did not compare speeds of websites between the two hosting …
Chose HostGator
I prefer HostGator over GoDaddy. HostGator does have better and more reliable customer support, and the user interface and user experience are overall much more friendly and easier to use. GoDaddy does have downtime associated with their hosting in my experience, but I have not …
Chose HostGator
HostGator is #1 in this category. Bluehost has terrible reviews and is always going down.
Chose HostGator
We looked at GoDaddy and a few other hosting companies before signing with HostGator as a reseller. We've continued to look at other companies when a particular business case presented itself for us to do so, however, it has always come down to us staying with HostGator for …
Chose HostGator
HostGator is a good platform, but not quite as capable as WPEngine.

GoDaddy
Good for transferring over an existing site. Truth be told, I haven't used it for building a brand new site-- I know that this is a fairly common thing but I just never needed it. For what I've used it for, it has worked well. For a small business with anyone with a little bit of technical skill, it's surprisingly good.

HostGator for email, domain and website hosting--delightful, 100% satisfied! Have always had ample capacity for company email needs, features work well. I have used it off and on for several organizations since 2011. HostGator website building is fairly straightforward, although I wouldn't recommend it for first-time web designing. The pluses on the HostGator website builder: great-looking themes, adequate webpage capacity, really cool scrolling capabilities, which trends well now. Easier than building a WordPress website from scratch, which can also be done for free in HostGator. I'd say it's limited compared to feature-rich WP, but it designs as nicely as Wix.

Pros
GoDaddy
  • Registering a domain - I've found their site to be the easiest to navigate
  • Website builder - their website builder is user friendly
  • Email hosting - easy to set up and use, wether in an email app or online email.
  • Wordpress hosting - I have multiple wordpress sites I use under one account
  • Their customer service is always very helpful and easy to contact.

  • The pricing is a big feature for this hosting company
  • Every three years when the hosting contract is coming to an end, they offer a reduced fee to upgrade your server plan, which is more cost effective than renewing at the regular rate for whatever plan you're currently using.
  • The customer service workers are professional and friendly.

Cons
GoDaddy
  • Support agents are woefully undertrained, even in knowledge of their own products.
  • Support agents will always try to upsell you, even when you're dealing with an urgent, high-impact issue.
  • There's no guarantee of uptime, and there will often be gaps in service as part of normal procedures.

  • Support could be better, it takes a long time to connect with somebody
  • You need to pay extra for a backup you can rely on
  • SiteLock is sold separately, but did not help when we were hacked
  • Site seems to slow down from time to time

We can't really choose anyone else and the cost/effort of moving all of the hosted data would be extremely large, and we just have to stick to them, and hope they improve service

Because we have in house technical support to compensate the lack of quality HostGator tech support, and because the price continues to be affordable the business is likely to continue using HostGator. They provide what the business needs and we have in house support to maintain it.

Usability
GoDaddy
Some integration could be much cleaner and smoother. Seems it used to be easier. Plus, they took away the catch all email feature.

Support Rating
GoDaddy
I think a lot of companies can learn from GoDaddy's support team. I have found:
  • Chat or phone support is almost always available.
  • Their agents are friendly and helpful.
  • Their agents seem to care and be knowledgeable about a wide range of issues.
  • I rarely have to escalate my problem to get the support that I need.
  • If they can't help me, then they can tell me why something is happening and direct me to resources that can fix my problem.

While you will get support from HostGator, it seems to be a different level from 8-10 years ago. It may take 15-20 minutes to get someone on chat, and unless you follow up, I've found followup email support to take a couple of days. If you stick with it, though, you will get support, and I've never had a problem they couldn't help with.

GoDaddy
We use Wix currently for our online store. It is nice and easy to use, but they don't offer the email domains as well (the last time we checked). They have pretty decent customization of the web page, but still limited. We're going to try it with GoDaddy, since we have other services from them already. It just doesn't make sense to pay two different companies for something we can do with one.

Return on Investment
GoDaddy
  • GoDaddy reduces our ROI by costing me in non-billable hours. I don't charge clients for sitting on the phone with tech support to power cycle the server or fix the php.ini file, so my $/hr takes a hit.
  • Their nickel&dime strategy requires I have an additional conversation with clients about their max recurring fees. Small as they are, I need approval for upping their bill. GoDaddy is only the cheap option if you don't value security, stability, or performance.

  • Usage of resale options easily quadrupled the money I was spending on HostGator
  • Trust in the host has to be earned, and HostGator has not retained that for me -- it will be a while before I feel confident in their uptime again
  • Overall, HG has been a positive impact on my business as a web developer
