Kentico

Well suited for marketers that do not have in-house web programming or web designing resources available. Less appropriate for people that aren't computer savvy (i.e. don't know how to use basic programs like email, Excel, PowerPoint) or for those who are not detail-oriented because if you skip certain steps when adding/editing content, your webpage won't render correctly and/or create negative impact for search engine optimization without you knowing it.

Pros

  • Full-feature CMS - Kentico is the whole shebang; it includes analytics, social media, email marketing, and doesn't require plugins.
  • User Interface - Kentico's user interface was redesigned in version 8, and was a vast improvement over version 7. Things are easy to find, and you can customize your dashboard.
  • Flexibility - my group feels that we can build anything a client would want or need within Kentico, if for some reason it wasn't there already.

Cons

  • Content Staging/Deployment Automation. You can "stage" content updates from one site to another (e.g. review/production sites) from the Kentico CMSDesk, but there currently isn't a way to include non-MediaLibrary files in the deployment. So to deal with that, we have to sync up manual pushes of files along with Content Staging deployements.
  • In terms of HTML5 standards from a Front-End development perspective, the default controls and templates aren't responsive out-of-the-box, and have some hard-coded values that appear to be editable from CMSDesk interface, but actually are not. We have had to create our own "starting point" for Kentico sites to solve this problem.
  • I've had some frustration with using JQuery on Kentico sites, purely due to how Kentico itself uses JQuery in its CMSDesk interface, but changes the default JQuery global hook from "$" to "$j". So for your templates that use JQuery to work properly, you will need to call "var $ = jQuery.noConflict()" before you write your JQuery code. Kentico also doesn't use the latest version of JQuery, so if you need specific support for a JQuery feature or plugin that uses a different version, you'll have to include that as well.

I myself, and many others on our team are certified Kentico developers, so we already know the platform well. That, coupled with the Kentico team's willingness to listen to our thoughts/concerns/ideas for continued improvement shows they're really on-board with providing a best-of-class product.

Usability

It seriously is one of the best interfaces I have ever used. I also love the fact that I can use UI personalization to secure any functionality by user or role that I don't want that role to have access to. The best part is the customization of the UI, I can add in any button, tab, or menu item I want through it, no code required.

Alternatives Considered

We used to use Ektron but that was a mess and it was their way or the highway. Their support was not there and their API was horrible. SiteFinity was our other CMS and it was good for many features but it just did not have the modules and support for document creation like we have with Kentico. Also, it got too expensive too fast. I evaluated SiteCore while I was looking for a new CMS but it was too limited with modules and was too expensive for our needs. Kentico was discovered while attending a SiteCore training for the purpose of evaluating SiteCore. A Kentico partner recommended it to us and after training on it as well for evaluation, it was the clear winner. It provided great modules, an easy way for our content authors to author content, and a great API and tools for migrating our content over from our other CMS solutions.

Return on Investment

  • Kentico has allowed up to get back on schedule of our three-year plan for website upgrades.
  • You HAVE TO select the right implementation partner. If you do not invest the time in vetting deeply it may come back to bite you.
  • You need to have a stable staff as you do not have time in a major web project to teach new admins all the time. Stability is crucial.
