MongoDB

MongoDB [is] great at storing JSON data grouped into "collections". In this format, you can store any JSON documents and conveniently categorize them by collections. The JSON document contained in MongoDB is called binary JSON or BSON and, like any other document in this format, is unstructured. Therefore, unlike traditional DBMS, any kind of data can be stored in collections, and this flexibility is combined with the horizontal scalability of the database. It should be noted that MongoDB does not have links between documents and “collections” (this is partially compensated by the Database Reference - links in the DBMS, but this does not completely solve the problem). As a result, a situation arises in which there is a certain set of data that is not related to other information in the database, and there is no way to combine data from different documents. In SQL systems, this would be an elementary task.

Teradata Aster Database

Teradata Aster Database integrates seamlessly with Hadoop's Big Data Stack and the analytic and visualization power of MapReduce, R, Graph, and SQL enables data scientist to deliver insights and reports and timely manner. However, without pre-existing Hadoop, the deployment of this solution will take more time and possibly will incur additional costs.

Pros

MongoDB

  • Not being written in C++, we can work with a much freer schema. MongoDB is very good to combine with JavaScript, mostly because the platform can be adapted to work with this language and leave aside what would be conventional procedures, and JavaScript is better for working with duplicated data.

Teradata Aster Database

  • Excellent performance compared to our legacy system.
  • Superb analytics for multi-structured data sources and types.
  • Multiple analytic engines and compatibility with HDFS are main advantages.

Cons

MongoDB

  • MongoDB seems to be one of the most complete tools in its field, I believe that it has all the features that a non-relational database should have.
  • Perhaps because it is a relatively new tool there are very few experts in the field of MongoDB.

Teradata Aster Database

  • Cost is one of the main concerns if deploying the solution from a scratch

Familiarity can be a great reason to continue use of a product as it affords you speed and tight accuracy in execution. Although I would love to try PostgreSQL as I've heard a lot of great things about it, MongoDB has not given me any reason or cause for concern in the projects that we have thrown at it.

NoSQL database systems such as MongoDB lack graphical interfaces by default and therefore to improve usability it is necessary to install third-party applications to see more visually the schemas and stored documents. In addition, these tools also allow us to visualize the commands to be executed for each operation.

I have reached multiple times to the MongoDB community for the help and they have provided each and easy solution for every problem. Over the internet and on stack overflow many people responds over the challenges. Now this tool is very much used in every company and projects so internally many people are there to give a support.

While the setup and configuration of MongoDB is pretty straight forward, having a vendor that performs automatic backups and scales the cluster automatically is very convenient. If you do not have a system administrator or DBA familiar with MongoDB on hand, it's a very good idea to use a 3rd party vendor that specializes in MongoDB hosting. The value is very well worth it over hosting it yourself since the cost is often reasonable among providers.

Alternatives Considered

MongoDB

I only briefly looked at CouchDB after I already began using MongoDB. Naturally, I have used many relational SQL databases.Since MongoDB did everything I needed, I saw no need to look around for alternatives.(Okay, full disclosure. I am an "association" vs "inheritance" object-oriented snob. In Rails, ActiveRecord implements persistence via inheritance for SQL databases. The MongoDB gems like mongoid and mongomapper add persistance via association. Boom!)

Teradata Aster Database

Compared to HBase, Teradata Aster Database has stronger analytic and visualization capabilities. The Terada Aster Database also more flexible in term of interoperability with other systems, and another strong aspect of Teradata Aster Databases, compared to its competitors, is its near-linear scalability, centralized streamlined data management and advance workload management platform

Return on Investment

MongoDB

  • Open Source w/ reasonable support costs have a direct, positive impact on the ROI (we moved away from large, monolithic, locked in licensing models)
  • You do have to balance the necessary level of HA & DR with the number of servers required to scale up and scale out. Servers cost money - so DR & HR doesn't come for free (even though it's built into the architecture of MongoDB

  • Teradata Aster Database has a huge impact in analyzing our Big Data to gain insight
  • The interoperability with Hadoop has greatly reduce the deployment time
