Namely has fit well into our corporate environment. I credit that to the initial setup team from Namely and our team that was lead by our HR Director.Payroll day is always a day of challenges. With a combination of hard deadlines to get processing complete and the review of the data before the payroll information flows through the system. Complications such as management requiring a new paycode at the last minute which will involve submitting a case to Namely Support for guidance. The timely response from Namely Support made the day run smoother.

Altus Dynamics CRM is a fabulous tool that meets our needs. Where we identify gaps, we can quickly and easily configure the system to meet those needs. Altus Dynamics as a partner were excellent at helping us get the system set up initially to meet our needs, though the lack of function specific training meant that we had to ensure resources on our end to learn through some trial and error at times. That said, Dynamics CRM resources are bountiful on the internet through community forums and groups and questions can often be solved within minutes of searching for the item.

Pros

Namely

  • Streamlined workflows that make it easy for managers and employees to request changes to their profile information
  • A robust performance process that allows for seamless annual reviews, 180-degree feedback and more
  • All-in-one information repository so employees can easily access information about themselves as well as get to know their fellow employees

Sparkrock

  • Integrates finance with payroll. Many solutions still run these as separate functions and this was one of the deciding factors for King's when purchasing Microsoft NAV in 2005.
  • Altus has added an employee web app that seamlessly connects the outside 'users' to the information they require.
  • HR position management has taken the many details of an employee in this environment and allowed each position to be tracked individually.

Cons

Namely

  • Time off tracking tool needs to be more customizable to accommodate varying types of PTO policies. Employees need to be able to easily see what time off they have available.
  • Performance reviews need to be more streamlined and user friendly for managers. They should be able to see employee responses while they complete reviews. A side-by-side view would be helpful or integrating the responses by question in one view would work as well. It's just very clunky right now for managers. Would also be great to have a place in Namely where managers can keep performance notes (outside of a scheduled review) on employees to reference during reviews and 1:1's.
  • Increased foldering capabilities in the Resources section to have folders within folders for better organization of resources.
  • Decrease lag time for benefits updates with providers.
  • Updates made in HR profiles should flow over to Teams page, like title and reporting line changes.
  • Ability to search the feed would be great.
  • Analytics on site usage, i.e., pages visited, resources accessed. This data would help show management the usage and engagement of employees as well as ROI.
  • More posting capabilities in the feed would be good. Allow posting of videos, audio files, gifs as well as increased text formatting capabilities.

  • Building in additional training support for end users as part of an implementation or upgrade.
  • Sharing of best practices amongst like minded organizations and creating system and or reporting standardizations where possible.
  • It would be great to see a "cashless schools" module as part of the product which integrates into the financial system!

Administrators and employees love Namely. It is very easy to use and streamlined. Employees stay engaged with news feed updates and enjoy all the self service options. The time cards are very easy to access and clocking in and out for non-exempt employees is a breeze. Namely is part of our family.

Namely is a user-friendly system that is continuing to improve its integration across platforms with HRIS, Benefits, Payroll, and Time. For us, a complex user with multiple clients and hundreds of hourly employees, it has been a good solution (though not without its drawbacks) and we have greatly appreciated Namely's willingness to listen to our concerns and requests for changes in the product. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Namely for any company far more simple than ours—especially small entities with most, if not all, salaried employees.

Unfortunately, in more recent years we've had a lot of difficulty with Namely as they've undergone a lot of internal changes. It took 4 returned emails saying the person no longer worked at Namely to find someone to help me (I finally called payroll) and it took a while to get connected with a direct source of help. Namely now has set up their "pod" feature of communication which works well for the most part, but is different. I felt spoiled when we first started with Namely, but now it feels very much like working with most large companies' help centers. There is a system to go through and you do have the option to click "urgent". In general the help is efficient, but it still takes a few days and it's hard to speak with someone directly. It is all done via online communications and is difficult to actually speak to someone on the phone. This works well for most cases, but I do feel frustrated more often than I'd like to with this type of communication. (2019/2020)

I was not part of the implementation of Namely. It was before my time. Prior to Namely the company used UltiPro, which is also a great system. The implementation / transition supposedly went smooth, but I cannot comment from my own firsthand experience.

Alternatives Considered

Namely

It has been a few years since I used SAP Success Factors. It is clearly for enterprise companies, so strictly speaking, it doesn't compete directly with Namely. Although I have my issues with Namely's user experience, it blows SAP SuccessFactors out of the water. SF is a complete disaster, typical of old-school enterprise software. It is bloated and frustrating to use. Namely is much better (though still has room for improvement). Of course, SF has a ba-zillion additional features and capabilities. Not really an apples-to-apples comparison.

We came from a product that was specific to our industry. It was old, tired and did not do many of the things the Altus Dynamics solution does. The only other product that we seriously considered was Microsoft Dynamics GP, however our finance team felt that product was too light for our needs and growth

Return on Investment

Namely

  • More labor intensive (cost us more money to switch to this product).
  • Decline in reporting capability (payroll general ledger report is a nightmare every 2 weeks).
  • Product cost is way too high for services delivered. It was the worst financial investment we have made in years.

  • In some cases the system has helped bring efficiencies to our world. The workflow capabilities of Dynamics CRM are extremely functional and helpful.
  • The learning curve can be challenging for some. Those that are overwhelmed by technology in general can struggle with understanding how the system works and where to find what they need.
