SolarWinds NPM

NPM is well suited to monitor devices for businesses of all sizes. It does an excellent job of monitoring, alerting and gathering statistics across your entire infrastructure. It is device agnostic, I have not found a device type that I have that it will not monitor as long as it supports SNMP.

It's best suited for large/multinational organisations with complex networks with limited qualified personnel across every location. However, I wouldn't recommend it for a small organisation with a very simple network architecture.

Pros

SolarWinds NPM

  • Generally speaking, NPM does alerting very well. It has a lot of flexibility in how to build and deliver the alerts.
  • Being able to do HTTP POST on alerts helps integrate it with modern tools like Slack and OpsGenie, even if it's not a baked-in integration.
  • The ability to get all relevant device data from one page (and a couple of tabs) is nice, and there is customization available within that view.

  • The ease of setting up active monitoring. Network Discovery.
  • Performance monitor and traffic monitoring.

Cons

SolarWinds NPM

  • One element we would like to see is a full stack view integration, which includes network devices within NPM. Currently, the stack view will only provide server, host and application stacks only.
  • We have UniFi wireless access points across our organization and at the time of writing this, support for them within Network Performance Monitor is currently not native and we have had to raise a feature request to get the MIBS included as a result, we cannot see the same metrics you would, for example, if you had Cisco APs

  • Sometimes it cannot seem to handle the load of many devices on one server.
  • Could use more user support communities.
  • Logging and reporting could be better.

Low maintenance cost and great support on problems and issues. SolarWinds has been used here for over 10 years and we are able to have minimal down time and has been solid on monitoring and alerting on our network setup. They are constantly adding new and improving the product and making it better to use all around.

It's easy to use at first. But, when you would either like to go technical OR trying to add a custom monitor the ease of use goes out the door and requires a lot of time to learn its SDK / Back-end tools.Way too much emphasis on user to user support via their Thwack site. Skimping on support cost much? It's slightly disheartening to get better support from other customers then from the "success center" or calling support. Really hurts the ease of use for the product, because its fine until things don't work out of the box, then it gets frustratingly difficult.

It takes too long before the initial response, asking for the diagnostics. Even when the diagnostics are sent with the opening of the case.

Most of my experience has been with a different version of SolarWinds.

For the sake of simplicity, WhatsUp Gold is better. It is cheaper and more cost-effective for what we need. I am sure it will scale up easily in the future if that growth comes.

Return on Investment

SolarWinds NPM

  • From a technical standpoint, preemptive warnings from monitoring have helped us avoid many outages which would have required after hours work and expenses to resolve problems when they happened.

  • Alerts IT team members when things go down after regular business hours. IT team is able to fix the issue before users arrive the next day.
  • Saves on system downtime and lost productivity
  • Remote monitoring means less staff hours spent checking for potential problems.
