Overall Satisfaction with Avalara

We use it for calculating sales tax and file tax. Mainly for the engineering and finance departments. The engineering department does the implementation. It’s part of our automated payment system and has been working fine.
  • Calculate tax
  • Address validation
  • API response time
  • Support response time is bad. Does not meet SLA.
  • Support response quality is bad. It usually takes a few times to get the answer I want.
  • API sometimes goes down.
  • We are more confident [about an] audit.
  • There are still grey areas where we need to hire an accountant for advice.
  • Setting it up and running is easy.
As I mentioned before, their service goes down sometimes and support is not always helpful. Other than those issues, it’s doing its job overall.
  • I don’t think any of those features are applicable to our business yet. They might be handy in the future but not now
I think it’s a great solution for companies with a complicated tax situation or with a lot of transactions across different states/countries. It might not be good for a small company because it takes effort to implement. The API is not perfect so there needs to be extra hands to design fallback strategies.

Avalara Implementation

The initial implementation was easy. As we grow and our tax situation gets a bit more complicated, things can get hairy. Their documentation is not as good as other services we use though.
