Overall Satisfaction with Pantheon

It is our major web hosting platform. We use it to host our main website as well as several of our smaller products. Pantheon allows us to confidently make updates, install patches, and build new applications on our website, knowing that our main site will stay rock steady for our readers.

Pros

Cons

  • I would love to have the ability to build on the Pantheon system outside of WordPress and Drupal.
  • The Localdev app needs a lot of improvement. Simplifying it and fixing it would go a long way to improving the quality of life of the overall service.
  • Better documentation of the Lando local dev tool and the Terminus command-line tool. More hands-on, step-by-step instructions.
  • Development time has been reduced by about 1/3.
  • Increased uptime. Our website uptime went from around 95% to over 99%.
  • Increased our ability to serve our customers. We are able to build more applications than ever before.
Our former hosting company was DreamHost. While we loved DreamHost, especially since it was free for nonprofits, we were always flying by the seat of our pants developing and updating plugins on the live website. Pantheon's multi-dev platform allows us to work on several projects simultaneously while leaving our main production server alone until the code is ready for deployment.

Pantheon is amazing for web applications that need to be reliable, rock steady, and fast. Pantheon is not good if the client wants a lot of development outside of the WordPress or Drupal platforms. However, if the developer can work within the framework of WordPress or Drupal, Pantheon is absolutely one of the best web hosts out there. Don't expect to get everything from Pantheon for cheap, though. They are not a "do everything 'unlimited' here for $5 a month" web hosting company. They are experts at web hosting. Period. Register your domain somewhere else. Setup your DNS somewhere else. Send your emails somewhere else. If you are just getting started with your website and getting less than 1,000 users per month, this is likely not a good option for you.
