Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365

We are currently using Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 to backup our whole M365 environment. Currently the only business need this addresses is a "feel good" blanket for leadership. In the event we have to perform an actual restore of our libraries, sites, etc. we are going to be in trouble as we heavily rely on tagging and this solution doesn't seem to restore these when completing a restore. Re-adding these tags will be tedious at best even when scripting it.
  • backups are great, almost set it and forget it.
  • the flexibility is also great.
  • restore speed is wonderful, not perfect, but really fast and efficient.
  • We really need tagging functionality for this to be our go to product
  • We spent a number of hours trying to understand why tags were not restored.
  • It has been a life saver for restoring accidental deletes (especially after the 90 day recycle bin hold provided in M365)
The built in tools for M365 for data protection just doesn't have the functionality we need so we pursued other options. Since we use Veeam for backing up our VMs both on prem and in the cloud, this made sense. We had plenty of opportunity to review and POC the software, but we never tried a restore of a full library (i.e. in the event of ransomware) and when we finally did, we discovered it completely ignored retention and sensitivity labels / tags. This is a big deal for us as we use these labels extensively in our environment and have automation based on them as well.
It does most things very well. If you use a complex tagging / label system in M365, it will be an issue when restoring a full library as you will lose all the tags.
We have been able to leverage restores of accidental deletions or missing data. We have not had a malicious attack, but in that case we would be working to figure out how to get the tags and labels put back.
It is great to have options, and we have used a number of these for restoring end-user data. Some restores require a little extra attention depending on the sensitivity of the files, so the flexibility has been very useful for cases like that.
the flexibility of the overall product. being able to restore where and how we need has been great. Being able to leverage various storage options has helped us keep things secure and distributed.
AvePoint appears to restore tags correctly. We are currently in a POC to determine if it might be a better fit for us.
support is fast and helps get answers when we need them.
