Likelihood to Recommend

10000ft

I think 10000ft is good for bare minimum project monitoring, we used it a large company because we didn't need to have exact numbers - it was just a rough idea to see where freelance resources were over burning. If, however you work a much smaller company and really need to know detailed information it's not as effective, there are many other software options that really allow for much closer and precise tracking. I would recommend 10000ft for companies that just need to monitor large freelance teams, track hours and higher level projects that are also monitored on other project management tools. It's a tool I would only use in conjunction with something else.

NetSuite

As a huge fan and advocate of single (or few) systems, I think NetSuite is a great solution for most 30+ employee companies that have a need to operate in the cloud. The cost and effort to integrate multiple systems (even if they're really good point solutions) rarely outweighs the value of a single system.

Pros

  • Tracks freelance resource hours.
  • Tracks multiple small projects and milestones within the projects.
  • Tracks budget information and scope creep.
  • Connecting various sets of information (tables) and displaying them in a logical manner in the interface is one of the best things about NetSuite. Customers and their transactions, Contacts (people), addresses, messages and support cases can be easily viewed in many ways, including from the customer record, the customer "dashboard" or queries (saved searches). This is typically in a "list view," wherein columns/fields can be added or removed and shuffled.
  • Customization! Some people are afraid of this, but there is so much power in shaping the system to your needs. Tweaking just the layout of a customer or transaction form can improve efficiency and reduce stress. Add a field to a Contact record to better distinguish certain people. Recently, I created a custom record/object type that serves as an integration "middle-ware" of sorts to allow Boomi to connect to the system which then connects to an area of the system not yet accessible via web services or ODBC.
  • While it isn't great at everything it does, it does a lot well. Just the fact it can do so many things at least okay is a huge plus. I think companies underestimate the value in having a large chunk of their back office sitting in one system essentially integrated automatically.

Cons

  • It's often confusing to use and find things, I sometimes find it to be a little counterintuitive as to where functions are (e.g. for tracking budgets and pulling reports).
  • When pulling a budget I always struggled to comb through the large amounts of data and time inputted. When I select a filter the page often wouldn't refresh or i'd forget to de-select a filter as it wasn't in an obvious place, which sometimes left me with pulling an incorrect budget.
  • The data is only as good as the people entering the time. Often with so many small tasks people would enter time incorrectly, in the wrong milestone or project. It lists all of your projects on one page, so it's not easy to enter it and there's a lot of room for error.
  • User Interface & Experience
  • Reporting - specifically data visualization
  • Modeling - building in assumptions and forecasting tools

Likelihood to Renew

I think there's limited uses for the tool and much more comprehensive options out there for multiple tools in one. With more people working remotely, it's hard to just use email and face to face, in some ways you need to have a tool that's a fall back and a record of where you are + where you're going

Year over year cost increases are high. There is also limited ability to go onto another system. We reduce the YoY increase, and with the new versions, the full scope of features available, the ease of customization, it is highly likely we will renew. With the ease of adding features/modules this makes it higher a probability. But the YoY increase, brings it down. The inability to switch platforms is a push (which for some is a bad thing). All things added up, I am all in

Overall NetSuite is very intuitive. Usability is the direct product of a proper implementation - the way you configure form layouts, add fields, assign permissions and develop workflows.

It has gotten better in last year or two, but as an experienced NetSuite user, I know more than many of the support reps and have to escalate. You cannot directly go higher, unless you are partner who pays for partner support.

I have the general complaint that they don’t always fix the things you want i.e. bug fixes etc. but I have gotten used to it. I average finding one defect every week, however they are usually small and unimportant. The pace of product development feels slow for this day and age. But as an admin, I don’t think I would want to go through more than two releases/year

Implementation is relatively simple compared to other software packages. Carefully reconcile closing balances from the old system with opening balances in Netsuite, and lock the old system so changes can't be made

Alternatives Considered

Although an interesting tool, compared to Basecamp or Workfront, 10000ft really struggles on the collaboration aspect of the tool. It's great for the bare minimum, recording hours and pulling a budget, but we also relied on email for collaboration and face to face meetings - which is no bad thing! Although for big companies and small projects it's nice to have everything all in one tool so there's less jumping and room for error. That would be my recommendation for any company evaluating it
Netsuite is much less expensive than SAP and easier to implement and use.
I have not seen the Quickbooks enterprise edition - we upgraded from QuickBooks Pro and Netsuite handles multiple users much better than QuickBooks did 6 years ago.
BigCommerce has more ecommerce features but does not handle financials at all or as well as Netsuite so a separate accounting system is necessary if using BigCommerce instead of an integrated package like Netsuite. Ditto for Shopify Plus.

We have been able to scale our business 25X without any major overhaul with Netsuite. Its dashboard setup makes onboarding new employees very easy and allows data to be shared across multiple offices. Its cloud setup does not put any pressure on IT to scale servers or other infrastructure. We have been able to become much more efficient in all aspects of the business.

Return on Investment

  • Positive - We were able to track multiple projects at the same time and record accurate hours.
  • Positive - Able to pull budget and excel reports which can the be analyzed further and relatively simply.
  • Negative - There were a lot of times when hours were entered inaccurately which left us in a bind with budget and freelance billing.
  • We have seen a positive ROI in terms or our financial management, fiscal period close, and our ability to manage a millions of dollars in revenue with a much smaller staff as compared to similar companies.
  • We are working to improve our ROI on the CRM side as we continue to customize NetSuite to our evolving sales process. Development has tied up resources so increased utilization and insight into the sales side should allow for increased sales and increased rev per sales after roll out of several changes.
  • Overall we have been able to change NetSuite as we have matured in some of our business processes. The resources utilized in the changes have yielded some very positive results. We were able to change some item types and utilized classes to further provide insight and depth into our business intelligence systems. Though we still need to pull out data to do any mutli-dimensional analysis.
