The software is excellent for any application which is too large for Excel. The visual interface surpasses that of most SQL platforms. It is quite useful for data mining in an exploratory way but less useful in statistical and regression analysis.

Teradata Database

It's well suited to large organisations where multiple departments across large geographical regions need to access one centralised repository. It's not so well suited to small-medium sized organisations where databases are not so large.

Pros

  • Crunches huge datasets
  • Has versatility in functionality and grouping capabilities
  • Native XML macro language is easy to master
  • The platform has great visualization tools
  • Data processing
  • Parallelism
  • Great diagnostic informations

Cons

  • The ten.do interface could use more detailed documentation
  • Teradata client tools
  • Unification of SQL language with most popular ones PL-SQL, T-SQL
  • Tools installation process on Windows

The interface is still based on 90s, overall usability will never be very high due to the intrinsic expertise required for any and all users of the application/system.

Alternatives Considered

While we have used SQL, 1010data is really the only industry standard product available for our use.
Oracle seems to have the upper hand. Oracle takes fewer resources and is harder to get wrong because the user has a very detailed install instructions and wizard to follow. Teradata has a place where you can store projects and collaborate, but so does Oracle. Teradata GUI has a way to build SQL if you don't know how, but Oracle has that as well. Building a view to do complex slicing of data is not the most intuitive in Teradata. Oracle views can be optimized and have meaningful functions that can be added to them.

Return on Investment

  • This has sped up the process of analysis.
  • We can now automate process which were performed manually.
  • Analysis can be performed more frequently.
  • Negative impact is again the slowness that would be felt by developers and users.
  • Negative impact is that there is a learning curve if they have been using any other type of SQL.
  • Positive impact is that you can collaborate with other developers by using projects.
