If you are considering purchasing this (very expensive) software, there is a 100% chance you are doing so because you have been awarded a Government contract that dictates you use 4Clicks Project Estimator. There are plenty of easier to use estimating packages out in the world, but you can't use any of them if you have a contract that requires 4Clicks.

VMware ESXi

ESXi excels at providing stable, highly-available resources for most applications. The vast majority of workloads can be virtualized without a penalty. Hardware accelerated assistance is exposed and effective, and the options are plentiful. Adding memory or compute resources is dead simple. Pooling of resources and defining resource priority is top notch. A key to succeeding with ESXi is to give it more than it needs - more memory, more CPU, more network bandwidth. ESXi will manage those resources effectively so long as you give it room to work.
However, with high-transaction databases and some latency-sensitive applications, ESXi may not be the best solution. I've encountered long snapshot times that have disrupted SQL operations when I/O is frozen to create the snapshot. VMware has documented this and actually recommends avoiding snapshot technology in these situations. While not a common scenario this can result in unexpected production issues without thorough, careful planning. ESXi is also not suitable for devices or environments where outboard hardware (USB and other devices) are required. Lastly, the floppy drive has been dead for years. Why is it still present in the default hardware for a virtual machine in the year 2020? Does anyone actually have a need for floppy emulation?

Pros

Project Estimator

  • The estimates it produces are simple and easy to follow. The formatting is good.
  • The tech support provided is very attentive.

VMware ESXi

  • ESXi makes management of hosted machines easy. Everything is in one place. If you have a vCenter (which costs extra) to manage all your ESXi hosts, then everything is truly in one place and there is no need to hop around from management tool to management tool. Al the virtual machines' hardware settings, OS information, storage volume information, backup information, even a remote console just like a KVM ... all of it is in one place.
  • ESXi balances workloads well when using vCenter. Behind the scenes, the vCenter allows an ESXi host to "talk to" other ESXi hosts and when one VM has resources usage that gets past a certain threshold, it can move virtual machines around to balance workloads, even while the machines are running and service users. It's completely invisible to the users, who don't experience latency or any kind of interruptions when their VM is being moved.

Cons

Project Estimator

  • The software feels 20 years old. It has not kept up with modern times, and practically functions like an old DOS program.
  • Clunky interface, arcane commands.
  • Even their training info focuses on hotkeys like this is 1995. Even though I am of an age to remember computers in 1995, the younger generations of managers/estimators are not. It is time to bring the software into the new century!

VMware ESXi

  • I would love for some of the features only available within the upper tiers of ESXi licensing to be available for Standard licensing purchases. There is a vast difference between free, standard, enterprise plus licensing.
  • The learning curve might be an issue for some users, but can be overcome with the vast amount of resources available. You might have to train to find all of the resources as well.

Me, not likely as my current company doesn't use it nor do I use it at home. However, I don't see my previous company ever switching away from it.

We have had a bit of trouble with support over the last couple versions of ESX. To be fair, some of the issues coincided with a change from detached storage to VSAN. We have had some system level problems (the good news is that we really don't need much normal support) that they have struggled to fix and that support has been slow to respond to and or be proactive to any degree in these issues. Like many companies that I've seen grow so large, this seems to be just what happens.

WinEst uses much the same database (RS Means/Gordion type) and has a similar interface. It is a bit cheaper.

We have adopted Nutanix Acropolis as a replacement for our NetApp and a long term replacement for VMWare. VMWare will be interoperable with Nutanix in the near future as a datastore to allow us to slowly migrate to Acropolis or continue to utilize VMWare. VMWare is definitely more full featured than Acropolis however there are some things that are not necessary in VMWare(such as VSan) that are completely built in to Nutanix by design. The Nutanix web interface however is much more responsive.

Return on Investment

Project Estimator

  • As stated before, if you are buying this software, it is because you have a contract forcing you to. While it does work, it is clunky, awkward, and very expensive.
  • The price of the software and databases has always been high, but with the fairly recent acquisition of 4Clicks by Gordion (who also bought RS Means for their databases), there is literally no competition. Prices will continue to be very high, with no check on how high they can go.
  • Again, can't fault 4Clicks tech support, as I think it is the best in the industry. They know their product and they respond to issues immediately. Considering what we spend a year for this product, however, you would expect nothing less.

  • IT can use its hardware budget efficiently by being able to overprovision and reallocate resources.
  • With the ability to quickly provision and reprovision with templates and automation tools, we are able to provide customers with computing resources and VMs when they need them.
