Absorb worked well for us for a number of years but once we started to push the limits of the software, the company and the product let us down. Support became unresponsive and the product enhancements that we were told were coming never did.

  • The Platinum Support Reps are invaluable. Expensive but worth every penny. They work with you on a daily basis to support your individual company needs and keep you abreast of the updates and changes that will help you use SF to its fullest potential.
  • It is a powerful suite of modules that has the potential to provide an integrated soup to nuts HR solution.

Cons

  • Customer Support is unresponsive and poor

  • Reporting out of Absorb is cumbersome
  • No search functionality within courses.

  • The bonus planning module is cumbersome and overly complex to administer and program each year. It is not intuitive - for example, the administrator must manually calculate the bonus targets outside of the system and input them manually because SF is not intuitive enough to do the calculations on its own.
  • The talent management suite was in its infancy when I started using it. It has had been developed and fine tuned quite a bit since then but is still not as intuitive and easy to administer as other talent management tools available in the market place.
  • SF is a hierarchical based system, like others on the market. This presents difficulties when dealing with a matrixed organization. The person who is planning the compensation or performance mgmt is not always the one doing the review or familiar with the employee. There are work arounds but they are manual and are affected by any changes made to the data system that is used to feed SF.

The score of 7 is a combination of great user experience with setback of the implementation and system admin. Taking the LMS as an example, our USA organization (1800 employees) was the pilot country of Panalpina global to implement the LMS. The end result (the baby) is great, however the cause of implementation (pregnancy and delivery) has been very painful. The key reason is the project implementation consultant did not understand what a corporate learning management system would need, they think and speak about "system" only. Success Factor should manage their partner more deligently when outsource system implementation.

The goals module could be a little more straightforward in terms of aligning and linking goals. The employee central is relatively new, so it's been a little buggy and we've had to use workarounds. However, overall I am very satisfied.

If you had asked me before the summer, I would have rated them 10/10 for up time. I am not sure if it was due to the SAP acquisition or not, but we had quite a few significant issues over the summer. Their servers have been bombarded. I know they are setting up new data centers, so some of these issues are supposed to go away. We have had more downtime than I think is acceptable, especially based on past performance.

We had some slow downs in last 6 months because of the server issues. They were experiencing load balancing issues. In previous years we have not had problems. We do batch our appraisals into one time at the end of our fiscal year which is June.

I would rate the support for Employee Central much higher - 9/10. It is a new product and they want people to be successful. For other modules, tech support is abysmal. They made some changes over the summer and last fall and it was really challenging. Their people did not understand the product and they would take an eternity to get back to you. They would make changes that effected other areas of product and they were not aware of it

In reference to the implementation of Employee Central, the consultants were less familiar with certain aspects of product as it's new. I would have liked them to have better handle on all aspects of product as there were some things we had to go back and change. They were however helpful and open to discussion all the time. They were very accessible to us.

Alternatives Considered

At the time of selection, we went with Absorb as they were one of the few that could handle online transactions for courses. We are in the process of migrating to Skilljar and will be discontinuing our subscription to Absorb in 2018.

We looked at Oracle/PeopleSoft, iVantage, SAP and Workday.
Success Factors was only one we looked at for both performance and compensation management.

We felt Workday was very good for HRIS, but that iVantage (our current system) was adequate in that area and Workday would have been cost prohibitive. We felt that the compensation and performance management capabilities of Workday don’t hold a candle to Success Factors.

Return on Investment

  • We were able to lighten the work load on our finance team by moving course purchase processing to the online platform.
  • Learning team was able to reduce the amount of live training and travel.

  • It's difficult to tie performance reviews to ROI, especially at my company because our talent initiative is only one of 8 things going right now. The biggest positive impact though has just been the changing expectations. We went from a company that did not conduct performance reviews, to rolling out a program to every salaried employee (executive management included) in about four years. There is a genuine mindset change that has occurred. Performance reviews are now a part of the normal, year-end process and people think about their goals throughout the year. Teams conduct strategic goal planning sessions, individuals are engaged in employee develop opportunities. What percentage has that contributed to our EBIT for 2013? I don't know. But I certainly believe it's had a huge positive effect. Overall our company's stock is up 50% from when I started here five years ago, and last year was our highest year of EBIT ever (and we've been around for 130 years).
