Acquia

Acquia is well-suited for any Drupal web platform. I think it best plays in the enterprise space, either for B2B or nonprofit/higher ed/government. Acquia is a great solution for smaller web platforms, as well, but the price is typically prohibitive in these scenarios.

Will this be used just for blogging or will this be used as a content management system? What plugin will I need for my website? Some CMS have plugin but they may not function the way you would like them to. So always do your research before making a selection on what CMS to use.

Pros

  • Simplifies installation of Drupal sites with one-click installations.
  • Development, staging, and production environments for a best-practice web development.
  • Access to git repos, databases, and backups that are all managed within the interface.

  • Once you understood how the MT language and framework worked, customization wasn't too difficult.
  • Allowed for levels of user access.
  • Ease of creating RSS feeds.

Cons

  • Account support is limited on the Cloud Professional plan and requires you to purchase support tickets for the smallest issues, whereas other providers usually provide basic support free of charge.
  • Acquia is very expensive, so unless you're an enterprise level partner, then it is likely out of your budget.
  • The online documentation could use a refresh in design and can be frustrating to search through for answers.

  • While it's beneficial to be able to assign administrative rights to a user so they can only post to certain places of a website, I can recall that Movable Type did not inform general users of the types of privileges they had. So, for example, when I knew I needed to make a posting to a certain area, and was unable to do so, I was not informed that I did not have access to make that posting. It would have been helpful for Movable Type to post a message on the screen, saying that I needed more permissions. This was very frustrating, especially when I was on deadline for a newspaper story.
  • Unfortunately, (or fortunately), I do not recall other negative experiences. I thought it was a pretty clean, friendly interface.

As a Drupal Web Developer, I have not encountered or been exposed to any other hosting solution that could surpass the benefits of having a site hosted on Acquia Cloud. Although, for any side-project or low-cost freelance gigs, I cannot expect that I'll always have the option of recommending Acquia Cloud, and that's okay. While I am at work and trying to help our team gain more exposure to my companies' extensive list of clients, when we have the fortune of adding another Drupal-based client to our roster, getting those clients on Acquia Cloud makes every other aspect of building or modifying their school website that much easier

I give it a rating of 8 points because it was so easy to use. I also gave it this number because I can't remember anything particularly impressive. It's just a good, decent product. It gets the job done and efficiently. I currently don't use Movable Type and have not used it in three years so the question referencing the renewal decision does not apply to me

Alternatives Considered

Acquia is more fully featured and mature.

Movable Type is better than Wordpress because it generates static sites that cannot be broken by losing your database connection. The custom fields in MT are superior to Wordpress because of the way the fields are presented in the new content form. You need to get paid plugins in order to get that kind of functionality in Wordpress. Most of the templates in MT can be customized with greater control because you're provided with more templates.

Return on Investment

  • Increased speed
  • Better security
  • Faster time to market

  • It works well enough on shared hosting so it yields good returns in situations where your client cannot afford dedicated servers.
