JIRA

JIRA is perfect for planning and tracking the work of different teams in a company. However, it's a really big tool with a lots of features and therefore, it makes sense to use other project management tools besides it. E.g. we're using JIRA for our IT tasks for which it's suited just perfectly while were using projectplace in the design team which does the job much better in a small team with tasks that are not very complex to specify.

  • It is a well-known and recognized issue tracking tool.
  • It is extremely customizable, both in terms of customization of the tickets themselves as well as how one can apply workflows to manage your process.
  • Given its wide usage in the market, there are a number of 3rd party plugins/integrations available for JIRA; you can tie it to your repository and have an integrated view of development within the issue tracking tool (for example).

  • It can be very slow, but it is taken with a grain of salt because our system has tons of data in it

  • Two layers of depth. Currently there are only issues, and sub issues. This causes problems when importing project schedules. We have found a creative solution, but the functionality of having multiple layers of issues is missed.
  • Programmed in Java. One of JIRA's strengths is also its greatest weakness in my mind. The fact that it is written in Java means it is tricky to deploy in cloud based solutions. Java requires multiple threads and a large chunk of memory, making it expensive to deploy in the cloud. Personally I would love to see a compiled version of Atlassian projects that have been optimized for different architectures. This will greatly improve performance and decrease the impact on CPU and memory resources.
  • More effective scheduled backup system. Atlassian recommends creating your own backup solution for Jira and other projects. While this does encourage people to tailor their solution to their needs, it does burn smaller companies and Admins that are less familiar with the system.

I believe JIRA is so highly regarded that we'll be renewing when it's time. I love the tool and know that the ones in charge of purchasing such tools will be inclined to keep us aligned using JIRA.

I used to get immediate support from the Jira helpdesk; also most of my issues are already explained in the user manual which is really helpful.

Take your time implementing Jira. Make sure you understand how you want to handle your projects and workflows. Investing more time in the implementation can pay off in a long run. It basically took us 5 days to define and implement correctly, but that meant smooth sailing later on.

JIRA blows Sharepoint out of the water. I've been a heavy user of both and the JIRA implementation we have now has reduced so many headaches within our organization. At one time, we had physical cards to track Sharepoint issues and were forced to stand around a board for 15 minutes, twice a week, fighting for urgency. JIRA has made it easier to enter tickets, prioritize them, watch them through the entire process and sign off upon completion
