AdMob

It is very quick to integrate with the application. You will start earning within a few days. It has a well-written API. You can go for it if you want a quick implementation but if you want to highly customize your ads then Admob is not a good [fit]. It has also less CPC in comparison to its competitors.

Google Tag Manager

If your site has been using plugins to inject tracking or javascript deployment, they are likely adding unnecessary bloat. If the lag time to get new tracking in place feels like an Ice Age because marketers have to talk to developers and then get in line, there's a faster way. If you want to have a single place to check for whether tracking is installed that ISN'T the source code, GTM is your friend.
And you can't beat the price.

  • It has a good fill rate, for our applications we got around 99.9% to 100%.
  • Better targetted ads, so it increases CTR.

Cons

  • Admob provides fewer CPCs compares to its competitors in the market.
  • Earning report needs to have a dashboard so that the user can easily monitor their earnings. There needs to be dashboard which shows aggregated reports as well as [reports] on application level.

  • There is a learning curve on how to properly use Tag Manager and its many features. You will have to test any rules and events you create to make sure they are implemented & tracking correctly.

GTM is quickly evolving and offers round after round of feature improvements based on user feedback. It is (obviously) the platform with the closest ties to Google Analytics and other Google products such as DoubleClick.

Google Tag Manager, like other Google products, is focused on user-friendliness. All buttons are clearly labeled, documentation is thorough and plenty of tutorials exist to help answer any questions. The layout and menus in Tag Manager are clearly labeled and consistent with other Google products.

It depends wether you are seeking official support from Google itself, in which case it would be rated very low because it's not their business model, they would rather have you work with one of their Google Analytics Certified Partner (GACP).In terms of self-served support, Google offer extensive documentation at https://developers.google.com/tag-manager/, recently revamped training (https://analyticsacademy.withgoogle.com/course05/preview), has active forums and user community (https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/104865292981489764063) which can typically answer even the most advanced questions.

I thought there was a little bit too much emphasis on AdWords stuff, not enough on the generic application of GTM.

Planning and communication will help greatly with an in-house implementation. If there are large teams, try to limit the number of people involved to 1-2 developers (back-end dev may be necessary depending on your platform), one analytics marketer and one project manager.

Alternatives Considered

We have used a few other ad networks, but they are not suited to our requirements. Admob has the best fill rate for Indian apps, that others lack. For our few apps that target USA and European customers, we use Mobclix. Admob has also fewer configurable thresholds for payments. For payment and taxation, they provide options which are as per the state laws.

BrightTag, Qubit, SuperTag and Tealium all have great products, without a question, and they're are great for organizations with very specific tagging needs. With that said, Google has a history of building phenomenal products - Google AdWords, Google Analytics, etc. and their systems always work well together. With Google Tag Manager having a strong integration with their existing products and having no cost to start the choice was easy for our organization. Google Tag Manager has our needs covered and with it, we are able to deploy tags across multiple sites with ease. I would recommend it to anyone

Return on Investment

  • We got a return on our investment very quickly, it's very easy to integrate with less development effort.
  • It needs less maintenance work.

  • GTM has allowed our team to more effectively track how users are behaving on our website, leading to more efficient, data-driven decisions that reduce the bottom line and increase lead conversion rates.
  • GTM has saved me time personally, allowing me to shift my focus to higher level strategy on website behavior and other technical marketing project.
