Adobe Captivate

Captivate is a great tool for creating content from scratch intended for use in responsive design. This is one of my go-to tools when this particular scenario exists. Captivate's responsive design option and the wide range of tools make the application an amazing option for mobile design. Despite having a PowerPoint import and conversion option, Captivate is NOT the tool to use when starting with content created in PowerPoint. Slides are imported as a single image, removing animations and any ability to edit the content.

One of the big considerations is how your process can be supported by the software. You should clearly map out what you want to do and how you'd like the software to support it. That way, you can identify potential issues or software deficiencies up front.

Pros

  • Adobe Captivate can integrate current PowerPoint presentation, and transform them into eLearning curriculum.
  • Publishing an Adobe Captivate project is simple.
  • Adobe Captivate uses built-in interactions to engage the learner, making the content easier to remember.

  • Visual organization chart and directory. This helps people connect easier and faster and provide a quick snapshot of the entire organization. Any headcount discrepancies are seen immediately and it allows business owners to inform HR and adjust/discuss as appropriate. We have many remote based employees and the org chart helps drive better connectedness.
  • Workflows. Workflows for approving changes and goals are very helpful in monitoring and auditing key business decisions. The workflows are easily customizable and gives employees a clear path of where a decision like promotion, job change, etc is in the approval chain. This reduces the need to send emails around for approvals - now everything is captured in one place and pulling reports provides an easy audit that all updates have been made.
  • Customizable performance forms. For our business, we did not want a overly complex process to enter goals, provide performance feedback, etc. The PM module was flexible in the changes we could make to capture the core info we wanted and not be stuck with a forced form structure that would include elements we did not want.

Cons

  • I honestly can't think of how to improve Adobe Captivate at this time. I've been using Adobe Captivate for years to create eLearning content. While I also use other authoring tools, I always come back to Adobe Captivate to do my heavy lifting. It's a great product!
  • I just thought about one thing. I really like the way I can animate square and circles in Camtasia to look as if they were hand drawn. I wish I could do the same with Adobe Captivate.

  • Your core data restricts you to a handful of custom fields/filters that are used for areas such as security, reporting privileges, etc. You must have strong forward thinking to consider which filters you will require and still have flexibility built in as your needs will certainly change over time.
  • Support is a constant area of improvement. When SuccessFactors moved to a tiered model, it grew difficult to ever have our issues resolved at the lowest tier. They didn't understand the issue, were slow to respond and it took forever to escalate. SuccessFactors now markets a Platinum Support option which comes at a price, though we've had mixed results. Their AZ data center seems to have frequent issues which impact your ability to login, run reports, etc. If you purchase Platinum Support, you will be on the 'good' data center and should have limited issues.
  • Reporting is still a bit clunky and can be an issue, though SuccessFactors has provided more options in recent years including Ad hoc Reporting, Dashboards 2.0, etc.

There is no doubt in my mind that we will be using Adobe Captivate for years to come. There are so many uses for the software that we are just scratching the surface. The more we use it, the better it gets. This is a great option for anyone looking for an eLearning authoring tool.

System performance issues are not enough to make us switch. We believe performance will get addressed. Functionally it meets our needs. We will figure out a way reviews spread out across the year vs. concentrated at end of year – exacerbating the performance bottleneck. However, if had known about the system performance issues pre-purchase I would not have still bought it

Usability

Adobe Captivate8.0

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

For what it’s supposed to do is intuitive. It didn’t take a roll out of corporate wide training – an average individual can figure it out. We came from iVantage which had no spell check, very poor word processing capabilities - most people wrote in Word) - and had a time out feature which meant you could lose everything if you hadn’t saved.

They have thought through the performance management process very well.

If you had asked me before the summer, I would have rated them 10/10 for up time. I am not sure if it was due to the SAP acquisition or not, but we had quite a few significant issues over the summer. Their servers have been bombarded. I know they are setting up new data centers, so some of these issues are supposed to go away. We have had more downtime than I think is acceptable, especially based on past performance.

We had some slow downs in last 6 months because of the server issues. They were experiencing load balancing issues. In previous years we have not had problems. We do batch our appraisals into one time at the end of our fiscal year which is June.

Support

The support team is good in responding and maintaining communication. Sometimes...well...almost always, you will find yourself having to use a 2nd attempt with more details and easier terminology to get the tech to understand the question or situation. These techs should know English 100% and their product 100% to be on a support team for the USA. I do not get the impression this is true.

I would rate the support for Employee Central much higher - 9/10. It is a new product and they want people to be successful. For other modules, tech support is abysmal. They made some changes over the summer and last fall and it was really challenging. Their people did not understand the product and they would take an eternity to get back to you. They would make changes that effected other areas of product and they were not aware of it

In reference to the implementation of Employee Central, the consultants were less familiar with certain aspects of product as it's new. I would have liked them to have better handle on all aspects of product as there were some things we had to go back and change. They were however helpful and open to discussion all the time. They were very accessible to us.

Alternatives Considered

I prefer Articulate 360 over Adobe Captivate. While Captivate does have more features overall, Articulate 360 is much easier to navigate and nice, clean courses can be created in a fraction of the time.

SuccessFactors Talent Solutions was implemented before I was hired. The application is intuitive and relatively easy to use.

Return on Investment

  • Adobe Captivate was a HUGE cost savings for us. We were using an external firm to design our content (in flash) which is now uneditable and not user friendly, at a large cost.
  • Due to the ability to publish more interactive PDF files we can allow people without access to Prime or an LMS to leverage our eLearning content through Adobe Reader
  • Full flexibility in updating and aligning training to new branding easily and cost free.
Susan Knolla profile photo
  • We are able to measure if every employee is receiving feedback on performance
  • We are able to work on career and leader development
  • We are able to standardize our processes globally and have better visibility into our HR practices
  • We are moving towards one system of record that starts and completes the employee lifecycle
