Amaxus

Amaxus is well suited as a development platform and content management system for companies who have a dedicated, experienced development team because it has such complex functionality. It is not well suited for companies whose main content updater will be a person with limited development experience, because it is so hard to learn and understand how to use.

Ektron

This depends on the client and their budget to start. Ektron relative to several lower cost and open source products is expensive. on the other hand many direct competitors are equal or substantially more expensive. Ektron often is positioned because of the technology stack - .net which would put it against a more limited selection of competitors. We hit the cost question on a TCO over a period of 3 to 5 years (and not just year 1) where Ektron based on its model fairs well when cost is an issue.

Pros

  • There is a lot of flexibility and power with what you can do.
  • The client has a lot of power to make changes on their own without needing a development team.

  • Content Publishing. Control is intuitive and very distinct from a workflow perspective. Advanced features such as tagging & taxonomy may be introduced for more personalization
  • Mobile. support for responsive design / adaptive sites is imperative and Ektron provides device based support to control the mobile experience relative to content, images, navigation, etc...
  • eSync. the ability to replicate from multiple environments at both an app level and content as well as in a bi-directional manner is very powerful and a differentiator for the WCM to competitive platforms

Cons

  • There is a huge learning curve for developers. All our new website builds were going beyond the timeline because of the learning curve.
  • It is very complex and teaching our clients how to use it required several training sessions.
Laura Bruss profile photo
  • The work area is not very user friendly and is based on a file folder system similar to a Windows based system which can cause some user problems with people who use a Mac.
  • Ektron's support system works as a ticket-based system. Your ticket may sit in a queue for a day before you hear from someone.
  • The Ektron system doesn't lend itself well to responsive design.

We think of Ektron as an investment and just like any investment, the longer you have it, the more ROI you receive (hopefully). We have been using Ektron since the CMS 300 days and have successfully upgraded to every version of the product since. Our content team is trained and comfortable with the product and we don't have any ambitions to change anytime soon.

Usability principles have been a part of modern web application development for some time now. Ektron lags behind in this area. It's not that the back end is terrible, but to me it does not reflect commitment, expertise, and a systematic approach to usability in Ektron's development process. There are too many UI idiosyncrasies and inconsistencies for my liking.

Unplanned outages or errors are fairly rare in our instance. And when there are issues, they're usually fixed fairly quickly

Ektron is one of the best solution for .Net platform. Over the years have improved the performance issues that the previous versions had. My only complain is right now you can't do Page builder pages if you choose to have a MVC architecture

Alternatives Considered

I have used an in-house CMS which was very simple and only allowed the user to update very basic templated content, and I have used Sitecore, which is sort of like a middle-of-the-road. Sitecore is great because it allows for the user to have a lot of control over templates and updating content, but it's not so complex that it is very difficult and time-consuming to learn how to use, like Amaxus.

Our purchase was years ago, but at the time, Ektron was one of the few full-featured content management systems that fit our organization's budget. Others at the same price-point lacked features and flexibility.

Return on Investment

  • It has a negative impact because it put us back on our timelines.
  • It had a negative impact because our customers didn't like the learning curve to use it.
  • It had a negative impact because it caused so much stress among our team to learn it.

  • Being a government entity, our primary objective is to provide constituents with relative and timely information from numerous departments. Ektron's CMS has allowed us to do so in an organized, efficient, and timely manner.
  • By upgrading to version 9.0 in our re-design phase, we will be able to provide our site visitors with a responsive website to better serve them.
  • Being simple to use, the Ektron CMS allows us to train individuals (who are not necessarily tech-savvy) to update content on behalf of their departments.
